How We Make It Safe

How We Make Treatment Safe for Your Family

Child and pet safe pest control is not about avoiding all products. It is about choosing the right products for the household, applying them to surfaces and voids that children and pets cannot access, and confirming safe re-entry before the family returns.

Low-Toxicity Products

All products are APVMA-registered and selected for low mammalian toxicity. Gel bait and diatomaceous earth have toxicity profiles that make accidental exposure by children or pets at realistic exposure levels a very low risk. Surface spray is applied at label rates that present minimal risk once dry.

Targeted Application

Products are applied to cupboard bases, wall junctions, subfloor voids, and external perimeter surfaces. We avoid spray application on floors, low surfaces, and areas where infants or pets spend time crawling and resting. Gel bait is placed inside cupboard hinges and under appliances out of child and pet reach.

Confirmed Re-Entry

The technician confirms the specific re-entry time for the products used before leaving. Children, pets, and vulnerable occupants are told exactly when they can return to each area. Re-entry is not a guess: it is based on the specific product label and the observed drying conditions on the day.

Treatment Methods

Child and Pet Safe Treatment Methods

We use four main treatment methods in family-safe programs. The right combination depends on the pest, the property, and the specific household situation.

Gel Bait

Gel bait is the safest application method for family households. Small amounts of bait are placed inside cupboard hinges, behind kickboards, under appliances, and in other locations children and pets cannot access. Cockroaches and ants feed on the bait and carry it back to the colony. No surface exposure to occupants at all. Preferred method for nurseries, kitchens with young children, and households with pets that lick floors.

Safe for children and pets during application

Contained Baiting Stations

Tamper-resistant baiting stations for rodent control are locked and cannot be opened by children or pets. Stations are secured at the perimeter and in areas where rodent activity is detected. The bait is inaccessible without the technician's key. Stations are inspected and refilled at each scheduled visit. Suitable for homes with toddlers, dogs, and cats.

Tamper-resistant: safe around children and pets

Targeted Low-Residual Spray

Where spray is the right method, we use low-toxicity pyrethroid formulations applied in a fine targeted pattern to skirting boards, wall junctions, and external perimeter only. Spray is not applied to floors, low furniture surfaces, or pet bedding areas. Family and pets vacate during application and return after the 1-2 hour drying period confirmed by the technician.

Re-entry 1-2 hours after surfaces dry

Diatomaceous Earth Dust

Diatomaceous earth is a natural mineral dust applied to roof voids, subfloor, wall voids, and other inaccessible cavities. It kills insects mechanically rather than chemically and presents essentially no toxicity risk to mammals. Suitable for households where any chemical exposure is a concern, including families with infants, immune-compromised occupants, or clients who prefer fully natural treatment.

Non-toxic to mammals at residential application
Re-Entry Times

Re-Entry Times for Children and Pets

Re-entry times apply once treated surfaces are fully dry. Drying time depends on the product, the surface, and Brisbane humidity and ventilation on the day. The technician confirms the specific re-entry time before leaving.

Spray Treatment
1-2 hrs
All surfaces must be dry to touch. Ventilate treated areas during this period. Children and pets return together when confirmed by the technician.
Gel Bait Only
Immediate
No re-entry wait needed. Gel bait is placed in concealed locations children and pets cannot reach. Family can remain in other areas during application.
Dust Treatment
Immediate
Diatomaceous earth and boric acid dust applied to roof voids, subfloors, and wall voids. Living areas can be occupied immediately.
Specific Pet Considerations

Pet-Specific Guidance

Different pets have different sensitivities. Here is specific guidance for each common household pet type. Tell us what pets you have when you book and we will adjust the treatment approach accordingly.

Dogs

Dogs can return to treated areas 1-2 hours after treatment once surfaces are dry. Modern pyrethroid products at residential concentrations are safe for dogs. Dogs should not be allowed to lick freshly sprayed surfaces before they are dry. Tamper-resistant rodent stations are used in homes with dogs.

Re-entry: 1-2 hrs after surfaces dry

Cats

Cats have higher sensitivity to concentrated pyrethroids than dogs. At residential spray concentrations the risk is low, but cats should not re-enter until surfaces are fully dry. Cats should not lick or walk on freshly sprayed surfaces. We can use gel bait-only treatments for cat-sensitive households on request.

Re-entry: 1-2 hrs after surfaces dry

Birds

Birds are the most sensitive to airborne chemicals. They must be removed from the property before any spray treatment, eco-friendly or conventional. They can return once the property is fully ventilated and surfaces are dry. Gel bait and dust treatments can be conducted with birds covered in another room.

Remove during spray. Return after 2-3 hrs ventilation

Fish

Pyrethroid products are toxic to fish and aquatic life at very low concentrations. Fish tanks must be covered with a tight-fitting cover and air pumps turned off before any spray treatment. Tanks can be uncovered and pumps restarted 2-3 hours after treatment once the spray has dried and the room is ventilated.

Cover tank and turn off pump before treatment

Reptiles

Reptiles are sensitive to many pesticides. Remove reptile enclosures from the treatment area or cover tightly before any spray treatment. Confirm the specific product with us before booking if you keep reptiles. Gel bait-only treatments are the safest approach for reptile households.

Remove or cover enclosures before treatment

Small Animals (Rabbits, Guinea Pigs)

Small animals should be removed or their enclosures covered and moved to an untreated area before any spray treatment. They can return once the property is ventilated and surfaces are confirmed dry. Gel bait and dust treatments in wall voids and roof space present no risk to small animals in enclosures.

Remove or cover before spray. Return after 1-2 hrs

FAQ

Child and Pet Safe Pest Control FAQ

Is pest control really safe for young children and babies?
Yes, with correct products and application. For households with babies under 12 months, we use gel bait and dust treatments in nurseries and play areas rather than surface spray. Gel bait is placed in concealed locations babies cannot reach. Surface spray is limited to the external perimeter and areas infants cannot access. We confirm the approach with parents before starting.
How long before pets can re-enter after treatment?
Pets can return 1-2 hours after treatment once all surfaces are fully dry. The technician confirms the exact re-entry time before leaving based on the products used and observed drying conditions. For gel bait-only treatments, there is no re-entry wait for pets. For birds, wait until the property is fully ventilated after any spray.
Is pest control safe for babies under 12 months?
Yes, with a modified approach. For households with babies under 12 months, we apply gel bait inside cupboards and wall voids rather than surface spray in sleeping and play areas. The baby must be out of the property during any spray treatment and can return after the 1-2 hour re-entry period. We can also use a gel-bait-and-dust-only program if parents prefer no spray at all.
What if my pet licks a treated surface?
Modern synthetic pyrethroids at residential application rates have very low mammalian toxicity. If a pet licks a dry treated surface, the exposure level is extremely low and unlikely to cause any adverse reaction. Cats have higher sensitivity to concentrated pyrethroids so ensure cats do not lick freshly sprayed surfaces before they are dry. If concerned, call 0406 178 471 and we can advise based on the specific product used.
Are there bird-safe pest control options?
Yes. For pet bird households, we use gel bait and diatomaceous earth where possible. Birds are sensitive to airborne chemicals so any spray treatment requires birds to be removed from the property. They can return after the spray has dried and the property is fully ventilated, typically 2-3 hours. Gel-bait-only programs are available and do not require birds to leave.
Do fish tanks need to be covered?
Yes. Pyrethroid products are toxic to fish at very low concentrations. Fish tanks must be covered with a tight-fitting lid and air pumps turned off before any spray treatment, eco-friendly or conventional. Tanks can be uncovered and pumps restarted 2-3 hours after treatment once the spray is dry and the room is ventilated. Gel bait and dust treatments present no risk to fish tanks.
Is eco-friendly treatment the same as child and pet safe?
They overlap but are not identical. Eco-friendly means plant-derived or mineral-based products. Child and pet safe means low-toxicity products and application methods that minimise contact risk. Many products are both. You can request both eco-friendly and child-and-pet-safe treatment at the same time at no extra cost. See our eco-friendly page for full product details.
Is pest control safe during pregnancy?
As a precaution, pregnant residents should not be present during any spray treatment and should allow the standard 1-2 hour re-entry period after surfaces are dry. Low-toxicity gel bait treatments can be conducted with pregnant occupants in other areas of the property. Consult your midwife or GP if you have concerns. We can schedule treatment times that allow the pregnant resident to be out of the property during and immediately after application.
