Ants in Brisbane: Why Treatment Is Year-Round
Brisbane's subtropical climate supports active ant colonies throughout the year with no winter dormancy period. Summer storms and flooding push ant colonies out of saturated soil and into buildings. The combination of year-round activity and the presence of multiple species means ant control in Brisbane is not a once-a-year job.
Brisbane Ant Species We Treat
Treatment approach differs by species. The most important factor is identifying whether the nest is inside or outside the building and whether the species responds better to bait or spray.
The most common household ant in Brisbane kitchens. 2-3mm, dark brown to black. Nests outdoors in garden soil and enters buildings via weep holes, window frames, and expansion joints following pheromone trails to food and water sources.
12-15mm, black or black and red. Nests inside moist or damaged timber including wall framing, roof rafters, and stumps. Excavates clean galleries and does not eat the wood. Confused with termites but treatment is completely different. See our carpenter ant page.
20-40mm, distinctive large eyes and long mandibles. Highly aggressive when the nest is disturbed. Nests in garden soil, under rocks, and in compost heaps. Stings are painful and can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Outdoor treatment with Fipronil drench.
1.5mm, almost transparent body with dark head. Common in coastal Brisbane suburbs, high-rise apartments, and commercial kitchens. Very difficult to see and control due to tiny size and preference for high-moisture environments. Multiple queens, polygyne colony structure requires specialist gel bait.
3-6mm, reddish-brown, aggressive stingers. A national biosecurity threat subject to mandatory reporting in Queensland. Suspected fire ant nests must be reported to the Department of Agriculture. Treatment is conducted under Biosecurity Queensland protocols using approved products. Do not disturb suspected nests.
Winged reproductives from any ant species leaving the nest to mate and found new colonies. Most common in Brisbane spring and early summer after rain. Flying ants inside a building indicate a nest inside the structure. Flying ants outdoors usually from a garden nest. See our flying ant page.
Trail Behaviour and Why Source Treatment Works
The key to effective ant control is understanding that the ants visible on a trail are foragers. Killing foragers does not eliminate the nest. Treatment must reach the queen to produce lasting results.
Scout finds food source
A single scout ant leaves the nest and searches for food and water. When found, it returns to the nest laying a pheromone trail as it goes.
Foragers follow the trail
Other foragers follow the pheromone trail to the food source and back. The trail intensifies as more foragers reinforce the scent. This is the visible trail you see on a kitchen benchtop or wall.
Foragers carry bait to the nest
Gel bait placed alongside the trail is picked up by foragers and carried back to the nest as food. Foragers share it with nestmates including the queen via trophallaxis (food sharing). Active ingredient reaches the colony at the source.
Queen and colony die within days
The active ingredient in the bait (Fipronil or Indoxacarb) causes delayed mortality. The queen and colony are eliminated within 3-10 days. Without the queen, the colony cannot recover.
Ant Treatment Process
Every ant job follows the same four stages. The specific products and application zones depend on the species, nest location, and property type.
Trail Tracking
The trail is tracked from the entry point back to the nest or the entry gap in the structure. Species confirmed. For indoor trails, the entry point is identified and sealed after treatment.
Gel Bait Placement
Maxforce Quantum or Advion Ant Gel placed in drops alongside the active trail. Also placed at the entry point and any additional trail sections identified. Not mixed with spray.
Perimeter Spray
Synthetic pyrethroid spray applied to all external entry points, weep holes, window and door frames, and the building perimeter. Creates a barrier against new colonies. Applied after bait is in place.
Outdoor Nest Treatment
For nests in garden soil or lawn: Fipronil granules or liquid drench applied directly to the nest entrance. Bull ant nests treated with direct injection. Active ingredient transfers through the colony over 48-72 hours.
Ant Prevention After Treatment
Treatment eliminates the current colony. These measures reduce the chance of new colonies entering the property and are worth doing regardless of whether ants are currently a problem.
