Ants in Brisbane: Why Treatment Is Year-Round

Brisbane's subtropical climate supports active ant colonies throughout the year with no winter dormancy period. Summer storms and flooding push ant colonies out of saturated soil and into buildings. The combination of year-round activity and the presence of multiple species means ant control in Brisbane is not a once-a-year job.

Brisbane Ant Pressure Facts
Black ant trails in Brisbane kitchens are most common in the weeks following heavy rain as colonies relocate from flooded garden soil. Bull ant activity peaks in spring when new reproductive individuals leave established nests. Fire ant response zones in Southeast Queensland include multiple Brisbane-area suburbs.

Brisbane Ant Species

Brisbane Ant Species We Treat

Treatment approach differs by species. The most important factor is identifying whether the nest is inside or outside the building and whether the species responds better to bait or spray.

Black Ant
Iridomyrmex spp., various

The most common household ant in Brisbane kitchens. 2-3mm, dark brown to black. Nests outdoors in garden soil and enters buildings via weep holes, window frames, and expansion joints following pheromone trails to food and water sources.

Most common indoor antResponds to gel bait
Carpenter Ant
Camponotus spp.

12-15mm, black or black and red. Nests inside moist or damaged timber including wall framing, roof rafters, and stumps. Excavates clean galleries and does not eat the wood. Confused with termites but treatment is completely different. See our carpenter ant page.

Structural damage riskOften confused with termites
Bull Ant
Myrmecia spp.

20-40mm, distinctive large eyes and long mandibles. Highly aggressive when the nest is disturbed. Nests in garden soil, under rocks, and in compost heaps. Stings are painful and can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Outdoor treatment with Fipronil drench.

Sting riskAllergy risk
Ghost Ant
Tapinoma melanocephalum

1.5mm, almost transparent body with dark head. Common in coastal Brisbane suburbs, high-rise apartments, and commercial kitchens. Very difficult to see and control due to tiny size and preference for high-moisture environments. Multiple queens, polygyne colony structure requires specialist gel bait.

Very small, hard to spotSpecialist bait required
Fire Ant
Solenopsis invicta

3-6mm, reddish-brown, aggressive stingers. A national biosecurity threat subject to mandatory reporting in Queensland. Suspected fire ant nests must be reported to the Department of Agriculture. Treatment is conducted under Biosecurity Queensland protocols using approved products. Do not disturb suspected nests.

Mandatory reportingBiosecurity threat
Flying Ants
Alates from various species

Winged reproductives from any ant species leaving the nest to mate and found new colonies. Most common in Brisbane spring and early summer after rain. Flying ants inside a building indicate a nest inside the structure. Flying ants outdoors usually from a garden nest. See our flying ant page.

Why Source Treatment Works

Trail Behaviour and Why Source Treatment Works

The key to effective ant control is understanding that the ants visible on a trail are foragers. Killing foragers does not eliminate the nest. Treatment must reach the queen to produce lasting results.

Step 1: Scout

Scout finds food source

A single scout ant leaves the nest and searches for food and water. When found, it returns to the nest laying a pheromone trail as it goes.

Step 2: Trail forms

Foragers follow the trail

Other foragers follow the pheromone trail to the food source and back. The trail intensifies as more foragers reinforce the scent. This is the visible trail you see on a kitchen benchtop or wall.

Step 3: Bait applied

Foragers carry bait to the nest

Gel bait placed alongside the trail is picked up by foragers and carried back to the nest as food. Foragers share it with nestmates including the queen via trophallaxis (food sharing). Active ingredient reaches the colony at the source.

Step 4: Colony eliminated

Queen and colony die within days

The active ingredient in the bait (Fipronil or Indoxacarb) causes delayed mortality. The queen and colony are eliminated within 3-10 days. Without the queen, the colony cannot recover.

Why Killing the Trail Does Not Work
Spray kills foragers on the trail but the nest and queen survive. New foragers are produced within hours.
Pyrethroid spray on the trail can scatter the colony into multiple new trails, making the visible problem worse and harder to treat.
Consumer bait stations are often placed on sprayed surfaces, causing ants to avoid the station entirely.
Professional gel bait placed alongside the trail is picked up and carried back to the nest by foragers.
Delayed-action active ingredient (Fipronil, Indoxacarb) gives foragers time to return to the nest and share the bait before they die.
Perimeter spray is applied after bait is in place to seal entry points and prevent reinfestation from new colonies.
Treatment Process

Ant Treatment Process

Every ant job follows the same four stages. The specific products and application zones depend on the species, nest location, and property type.

Stage 1

Trail Tracking

The trail is tracked from the entry point back to the nest or the entry gap in the structure. Species confirmed. For indoor trails, the entry point is identified and sealed after treatment.

Stage 2

Gel Bait Placement

Maxforce Quantum or Advion Ant Gel placed in drops alongside the active trail. Also placed at the entry point and any additional trail sections identified. Not mixed with spray.

Stage 3

Perimeter Spray

Synthetic pyrethroid spray applied to all external entry points, weep holes, window and door frames, and the building perimeter. Creates a barrier against new colonies. Applied after bait is in place.

Stage 4

Outdoor Nest Treatment

For nests in garden soil or lawn: Fipronil granules or liquid drench applied directly to the nest entrance. Bull ant nests treated with direct injection. Active ingredient transfers through the colony over 48-72 hours.

Prevention

Ant Prevention After Treatment

Treatment eliminates the current colony. These measures reduce the chance of new colonies entering the property and are worth doing regardless of whether ants are currently a problem.

Seal weep holes with weep hole covers. Standard brick weep holes are the most common ant entry point in Brisbane homes. Mesh covers allow ventilation while blocking ant entry.
No pet food overnight. Pet food bowls left on the floor overnight are the single most common ant attractant in Brisbane households. Remove bowls at night or place them in a shallow tray of water as a moat barrier.
Fix moisture sources. Leaking taps under sinks, condensation around dishwasher connections, and blocked air conditioning drains provide the water source that sustains ant colonies inside walls and under floors.
Cut back vegetation. Tree branches touching the roofline and dense shrubs against the external wall give ants a bridge into the structure that bypasses the perimeter spray barrier.
Regular perimeter treatment. Quarterly perimeter spray is the most reliable ongoing protection for Brisbane homes. The spring flush and post-rain activity periods are the highest risk windows for new ant entry.
Seal pipe penetrations. Gaps around plumbing entries, electrical conduit, and air conditioning pipe penetrations are secondary entry routes that allow ants to bypass perimeter spray. Fill with silicone or expanding foam.

FAQ

Ant Control FAQ

How long does ant treatment take to work?
Gel bait begins working within 24-48 hours as foragers carry the active ingredient back to the colony. You may see increased activity around the bait in the first 24 hours, which is normal. Full colony elimination typically takes 3-7 days for small colonies and 10-14 days for larger or outdoor colonies. Perimeter spray provides immediate knockdown of ants contacting treated surfaces.
Why do ants keep coming back after treatment?
Recurring infestations almost always mean the nest was not eliminated. This happens when trail spray is used instead of bait, when the bait placement missed the active trail, or when new colonies are entering through unsealed penetrations after the perimeter spray residual expires. Quarterly perimeter treatment is the most reliable long-term solution for Brisbane properties with persistent ant pressure.
Are bull ant stings dangerous?
Bull ant stings cause significant pain and local swelling. In rare cases, individuals with hymenoptera venom allergy can have a severe systemic reaction. Bull ant nests should not be disturbed. If you or a family member has a known insect sting allergy, do not approach the nest. Call 0406 178 471 for same-day treatment. Seek immediate medical attention if any signs of allergic reaction occur following a sting.
What are the signs of carpenter ants versus termites?
Carpenter ants (12-15mm) have a pinched waist, bent antennae, and leave clean wood shavings (frass) that look like sawdust around the entry hole. Termites (3-5mm) are pale, have straight antennae, and produce muddy material rather than clean shavings. If you find wood damage, do not disturb it until an inspection confirms the species. See our carpenter ant page for a full comparison.
Why doesn't surface spray work for ants?
Spray kills foragers on the trail but leaves the nest and queen intact. New foragers replace killed ones within hours. Some pyrethroid sprays also scatter the trail into multiple new routes, spreading the visible problem. Effective ant treatment requires bait that foragers carry back to the colony so the active ingredient reaches the queen at the source.
What attracts ants into Brisbane homes?
The main attractants are: pet food left out overnight, sticky or sweet spills on benchtops and floors, leaking taps and moisture under sinks, and crumbs in hard-to-reach areas under appliances. After heavy rain, colonies in flooded garden soil also enter buildings for shelter regardless of the food situation inside the property.
Are flying ants a problem in Brisbane?
Flying ants are reproductive alates leaving an established nest to mate. A swarm outdoors in spring is a normal seasonal event and does not usually need treatment. Flying ants seen inside a building, particularly dropping from ceiling fixtures or emerging from wall outlets, indicate a nest inside the structure. This does need professional inspection and treatment. See our flying ant page.
How much does ant treatment cost in Brisbane?
Ant treatment costs from $180 for a unit or small house, from $220 for a 3-4 bedroom house, and from $280 for a property requiring outdoor nest treatment. Carpenter ant treatment starts from $220. All prices include a 90-day warranty. See our ant treatment pricing guide for a full breakdown.
Is ant treatment safe for pets?
Yes. Gel bait is placed in concealed locations pets cannot access. Perimeter spray is safe for pets once dry, typically 1-2 hours after application. Pets should stay out of freshly sprayed areas until dry. For households with pets that spend time close to treated surfaces, we can use pyrethrin as the spray component on request.
Can outdoor ant nests be treated?
Yes. Outdoor nests in garden beds, lawn areas, and under pavers are treated with Fipronil granules or liquid drench applied to the nest entrance. Bull ant nests receive direct injection treatment. Fire ant nests are treated under Biosecurity Queensland protocols. Call 0406 178 471 to report a suspected fire ant nest before treating.
