Mosquito Control Brisbane
Brisbane's subtropical climate supports year-round mosquito breeding. Yard fogging, vegetation residual spray, BTI larvicide for breeding sites, and automated misting systems for outdoor entertaining. From $220 single treatment, $80/month ongoing.
Mosquito Species in Brisbane
Brisbane has over 60 mosquito species but three account for the vast majority of residential nuisance and disease risk. Species identification matters because their breeding sites, peak activity periods, and disease risk profiles differ.
The primary disease vector in Southeast Queensland. Breeds in tidal saltmarsh and mangrove areas. Adults disperse up to 50km from coastal breeding sites. Active at dusk and dawn. Responsible for the majority of Ross River Virus transmission in Brisbane. Worst after king tides and summer rain events that flood coastal habitats.
Ross River Virus vectorBreeds in freshwater including drains, ponds, neglected pools, and slow-moving waterways. The main night-biting mosquito in suburban Brisbane. Also a Ross River Virus vector. Worst in summer after heavy rain when urban stormwater systems fill. Found across all Brisbane suburbs regardless of coastal proximity.
Ross River Virus vectorBreeds in small water-holding containers: pot plant saucers, buckets, roof gutters, and tyres. Active during the day rather than at dusk. Ae. notoscriptus (striped mosquito) is the suburban nuisance species. Ae. aegypti (the Dengue mosquito) is present in North Queensland but not established in Brisbane metro.
Container breeder. Day-biting.Why Brisbane Has Year-Round Mosquito Pressure
Brisbane's topography creates a specific mosquito pressure profile that differs from southern cities. The combination of coastal saltmarsh habitat, extensive creek and canal networks, and subtropical rainfall makes Brisbane one of Queensland's highest mosquito burden areas outside the tropics.
Health Risks from Brisbane Mosquitoes
Beyond the nuisance of biting, Brisbane mosquitoes carry diseases that affect a significant number of residents each year. Ross River Virus is the primary concern.
Ross River Virus
Endemic to Southeast Queensland. Symptoms include joint pain, fatigue, rash, and fever. No cure; management is symptomatic. Recovery takes weeks to months. Brisbane records several hundred confirmed cases annually with higher rates in bayside suburbs. Transmitted by Ae. vigilax and Cx. annulirostris.
Barmah Forest Virus
Similar presentation to Ross River Virus with joint inflammation, fatigue, and rash. Also present in Southeast Queensland. Transmitted by the same mosquito species as Ross River. Less frequently reported than Ross River but shares the same geographic distribution.
Dengue Fever (Low Brisbane Risk)
Dengue requires Aedes aegypti as its vector. Ae. aegypti is established in North Queensland (Cairns, Townsville) but is not currently established in Brisbane metro. Returned travellers from North Queensland or overseas can carry Dengue, but local transmission in Brisbane is not occurring. The primary Dengue risk for Brisbane residents is travel to tropical areas.
Heartworm in Dogs
Dirofilaria immitis (dog heartworm) is transmitted by mosquitoes in Brisbane and is a significant veterinary risk for unprotected dogs. Year-round mosquito activity in Brisbane means year-round heartworm exposure risk. Mosquito control around dog resting areas reduces but does not eliminate this risk; veterinary prevention is essential.
Mosquito Treatment Methods
Effective mosquito management targets both adult mosquitoes and their breeding sites. Treating adults alone produces a short-term result. Addressing breeding sites extends protection significantly.
Yard Fogging
Thermal or ULV (ultra-low volume) fogging delivers fine insecticide particles through the yard, killing active adult mosquitoes in flight and on resting surfaces. Most effective when applied in the evening as mosquitoes become active. Provides rapid knockdown of the adult population. Used before outdoor events for immediate effect and in combination with residual vegetation spray for longer protection.
Residual Vegetation Spray
Residual insecticide applied to dense vegetation, garden beds, under decking, and fence lines where adult mosquitoes rest during the day. Adult mosquitoes spend most of their time resting in cool, shaded vegetation rather than flying. Treating resting sites kills adults that were not active during fogging and provides 3-6 weeks of residual protection on vegetation surfaces.
Breeding Source Elimination
Identification and treatment of all accessible standing water on the property. BTI (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis) biological larvicide is applied to water that cannot be emptied, such as ornamental ponds, roof gutters, and water features. BTI kills mosquito larvae specifically without harming other aquatic life or pets. Source elimination is the most cost-effective long-term mosquito management strategy.
Automated Misting System
Nozzles installed at eave level or on fence posts deliver timed residual mist around the outdoor entertaining area. Programmable for dusk and dawn timing to coincide with peak mosquito activity. Manual override available for pre-event operation. Most effective for properties with regular outdoor entertaining, pool areas, or commercial hospitality venues. Installation price includes equipment, fitting, and first-season product supply.
Mosquito Breeding Sources Found in Brisbane Properties
Any container or depression that holds water for more than 7 days can produce adult mosquitoes. These are the most common breeding sources found during property inspections in Brisbane.
Pot plant saucers
The most common breeding source in Brisbane backyards. Empty weekly or apply BTI tablets.
Blocked roof gutters
A single blocked gutter section can produce thousands of mosquitoes per week in summer.
Bird baths
Change water weekly or apply BTI. Empty and scrub sides to remove eggs.
Tarps and pool covers
Water pools in folds and on flat surfaces. Drain or tighten to remove standing pools.
Neglected pools or water features
Unmaintained pools without chlorination are significant breeding sites. BTI or pool treatment required.
Stormwater pits and drains
Council-managed but can be reported. BTI mosquito dunks placed in accessible pits.
Brisbane Mosquito Pressure by Season
Brisbane does not have a true mosquito-free period but pressure varies significantly. November to April is the high-risk window for both disease exposure and nuisance biting.
Post-rain events in any season can produce localised mosquito surges within 7-10 days as standing water breeding sites produce adult mosquitoes.
Mosquito Treatment Cost Brisbane
All standard treatment prices include fogging, residual vegetation spray, and breeding source identification and treatment. See our mosquito treatment pricing page.
