Bee Removal Brisbane
We prioritise live hive relocation through partnered beekeepers wherever the situation allows. For bees in wall cavities and roof voids, extraction and relocation is performed. Wasps are identified and treated separately. From $280.
Bees vs Wasps: Identification Before Calling
Around half of call-outs reported as "bees" in Brisbane turn out to be wasps. This matters because the treatment approach is completely different. Bees are treated with relocation wherever possible; wasps are treated with pesticide. Incorrect identification before calling is fine; we confirm on arrival. This table this table helps you describe what you have seen.
| Feature | Honey Bee | Paper Wasp | European Wasp |
|---|---|---|---|
| Body colour | Golden-amber with dark banding, fuzzy | Yellow-orange with dark markings, smooth | Bright yellow and black, smooth |
| Body shape | Stout, round, hairy | Slender, narrow waist, long dangling legs | Compact, bright, narrow waist |
| Nest type | Wax honeycomb in cavity or hive | Open papery umbrella nest under eaves | Paper nest in ground or roof void |
| Nest smell | Strong honey/wax smell | None distinctive | None distinctive |
| Aggression | Generally low unless disturbed | Moderate, stings if nest approached | High, stings unprovoked near nest |
| Sting | Single sting, leaves barb, bee dies | Multiple stings, no barb left | Multiple stings, highly aggressive |
| Treatment | Relocation where possible | Nest removal and pesticide | Pesticide. Biosecurity reporting required. |
If you are unsure, call 0406 178 471 and describe what you see. Alternatively, photograph the insects from a safe distance and we can confirm species before attendance. See our wasp control page for wasp-specific treatment information.
Common Bee Situations in Brisbane Properties
Brisbane's urban tree canopy and warm climate make it one of the most bee-active cities in Southeast Queensland. September to December is the peak swarming season as established hives produce new queens and split. Each situation has a different treatment approach.
Swarm on a branch or fence
A temporary cluster of 3,000-20,000 bees resting while scout bees locate a permanent home. Swarms typically stay in one place for 24-72 hours. They are not defensive in the swarming state and will not sting unless directly handled. This is the easiest scenario for live beekeeper relocation. If the swarm is accessible, call us and we will arrange a beekeeper partner collection at low cost.
Established hive in a roof void
An established hive in the roof void may contain tens of thousands of bees and significant honeycomb. Roof void bees that have built honeycomb must have the comb removed as well as the bees. Leaving comb causes fermentation, seeping honey, and wax moth infestation. Access is via the roof hatch or by removing a section of ceiling lining.
Bees in a wall cavity
One of the most complex removal situations. Bees enter through a gap in external cladding, brick mortar, or around a pipe penetration and build comb inside the wall frame. Removal requires either opening the external cladding or cutting into the internal wall lining to access the hive. See the wall cavity section below for the full process.
Bees in an eave or soffit
Bees nesting inside eaves or in the soffit space between the ceiling and the roof are a common Brisbane situation in older homes with timber construction. Access is often available from the roof void without requiring wall opening, making this more manageable than a wall cavity nest.
Live Hive Relocation: Our Default Approach
Where the situation allows, live relocation through a beekeeper partner is our preferred outcome. Bees are critical pollinators and their decline has significant consequences for Brisbane's urban food systems. We do not treat bees as a standard pest and will not kill them where relocation is a viable option.
Live relocation is included at no extra charge when accessible
For swarms and accessible outdoor hives, we coordinate collection with a partnered local beekeeper. The beekeeper takes the queen, workers, and any comb to a managed apiary. No insecticide is used. No extra charge applies for live collection when the situation is accessible. For enclosed situations (wall cavities, roof voids) where the comb must also be removed, access costs apply and full live relocation may not be achievable, but the maximum number of bees are saved via beekeeper involvement where possible.
Wall Cavity and Roof Void Bee Removal
These are the two most involved bee removal situations. Both require comb removal in addition to bee removal. Leaving comb behind is not an option.
Wall Cavity Bee Hive Removal
Roof Void Bee Hive Removal
Wall patching and ceiling repair after access cutting are not included in the pest control scope. We provide a referral to a qualified handyman or plasterer upon request.
When Bee Removal Rather Than Relocation Is Required
In most cases live relocation is attempted first. There are situations where full removal and treatment is the necessary outcome rather than relocation alone.
Inaccessible hive in a sealed cavity
Where the hive cannot be accessed without disproportionate building work, removal and insecticide treatment through the entry gap is the practical option.
Aggressive, defensive colony
Some established colonies, particularly older hives or those previously disturbed, are too defensive for safe beekeeper handling. Insecticide treatment may be required before comb access.
Allergic occupant on the property
Where someone at the property has a known severe bee allergy (anaphylaxis risk), swift insecticide treatment may be the only safe approach regardless of accessibility.
No beekeeper availability
If our beekeeper partners are unavailable within a reasonable timeframe and the situation is urgent, insecticide treatment proceeds with comb removal to prevent structural damage from unattended honeycomb.
Bee Removal Cost Brisbane
All prices include attendance, assessment, and the bee removal or relocation service. Wall patching after cavity access is not included in the pest control price.
