Do not spray or approach a wasp nest yourself

Disturbing an active wasp nest triggers an immediate defensive response. Wasps sting multiple times without losing their stinger. Consumer spray at close range worsens the situation: surviving wasps become more aggressive and workers at the nest disperse and sting. Keep clear of the nest and call 0406 178 471 for same-day treatment in full protective equipment.

Brisbane Wasp Species

Wasp Species Found in Brisbane

Four wasp types are routinely treated in Brisbane. Sting risk, nest scale, and treatment method vary significantly by species. European wasps carry the highest risk and the most complex treatment requirements.

Paper Wasp
Moderate Risk

Orange-brown to reddish, slender body, yellow markings, legs dangle in flight. Open umbrella-shaped papery nest under eaves, roof overhangs, and letter boxes. Colony of 20-200 workers. Defensive only when the nest is approached. Most common wasp complaint in Brisbane residential properties. Species include Polistes and Ropalidia.

European Wasp
High Risk · Biosecurity QLD

Bright yellow and black, compact body, does not dangle legs in flight. Ground nests, wall cavities, roof voids. Colony up to 100,000 workers in established nests. Highly aggressive at distance from the nest. Multiple painful stings with little provocation. A Biosecurity Queensland reportable species. See our European wasp page.

Mud Wasp
Low Risk

Slender, black or blue-black, often with yellow or orange markings. Solitary. Builds clay tubes on walls, eaves, window frames, and garden sheds. Hunts spiders and caterpillars to provision the tube as a larder. Non-aggressive; will not sting unless directly handled. The clay tubes are aesthetic nuisance rather than a safety concern.

Yellow Jacket
High Risk

Similar to European wasps in colouring but smaller (10-15mm). Nest in ground cavities, wall voids, and roof spaces. Aggressive when the nest is disturbed. Less commonly found than paper or European wasps in Brisbane but increasingly reported in suburban areas. Treatment is the same protocol as European wasp.

Treatment Methods

Wasp Nest Treatment Methods

Treatment method is selected based on species, nest location, and accessibility. All professional wasp treatments are carried out in full protective equipment. Treatment is always conducted at low light when most workers are inside the nest.

Insecticidal Dust

Paper wasps, European wasps, yellow jackets, wall cavity nests

Insecticidal dust (Permethrin or Carbaryl formulation) applied directly to the nest opening using a hand duster. Workers returning to the nest contact the dust and carry it inside, spreading it to nestmates. Most effective for enclosed nests (wall cavities, roof voids, ground nests) where the nest opening provides a concentrated treatment point. Applied at dusk or dawn when foraging workers are back inside.

Foam or Spray

Paper wasps (open nests), accessible nests

Fast-acting contact insecticide in foam or spray form applied directly to the nest and surrounding workers. Foam expands to fill nest cavities and kills on contact. Most appropriate for open paper wasp nests under eaves and for nests in accessible locations. Applied from a safe working distance using an extension lance. Nest physically removed after workers are eliminated.

Mud Tube Removal

Mud wasps only

Clay mud tubes scraped from the surface and disposed of. No insecticide required. If the tube is occupied with a live wasp larva inside, the tube is sealed to prevent emergence rather than removed open. A residual surface spray may be applied to discourage future tube construction at the same location. Generally the lowest-risk wasp treatment performed.

European Wasp: Biosecurity QLD Reportable

European Wasp: The Highest-Risk Species in Brisbane

European wasps (Vespula germanica) have established in Brisbane. They are more dangerous than any native wasp species, more aggressive, and subject to mandatory Biosecurity Queensland reporting. If you suspect European wasps, do not approach the nest.

European Wasp: What Makes Them Different
A paper wasp colony has 20-200 workers and is defensive only at close range. A European wasp colony can have up to 100,000 workers and will sting unprovoked at several metres from the nest. This difference in scale and aggression makes European wasps a category apart from all other Brisbane wasp species.
Colony size up to 100,000 workers in a mature nest (September-February in Brisbane)
Aggressive at several metres from the nest with little provocation
Can sting multiple times without dying, releasing alarm pheromone that attracts more workers
Biosecurity Queensland reportable species: we are required by law to report confirmed nests
Treatment requires full protective equipment, extended approach distance, and dust application to the nest entrance
Do not attempt DIY treatment. Call 0406 178 471 immediately. See our European wasp page for full details.
Why DIY Wasp Treatment Is Risky

Why DIY Wasp Nest Treatment Often Goes Wrong

Consumer wasp spray can work on very small, isolated mud wasp tubes. For paper wasp nests under eaves and European wasp nests, DIY treatment carries significant sting risk and often fails to eliminate the colony.

Consumer spray requires close approach

Most consumer wasp sprays require being within 1-2 metres of the nest. This places the applicator inside the defensive zone. Workers that are not immediately killed begin stinging immediately.

Spray at the nest face misses workers inside

Spray applied to the outside of an open paper wasp nest kills surface workers but does not reach workers inside cells or returning foragers. The colony can recover within days.

Knocking down the nest without treatment

Physically knocking a wasp nest down without chemical treatment disperses workers rather than killing them. They reconvene, become more aggressive, and rebuild at the same or a nearby location.

European wasp DIY is not safe

European wasp ground or wall-cavity nests cannot be safely approached without a full bee suit. Consumer spray at the nest opening of a large European wasp nest triggers an immediate and overwhelming defensive response.

FAQ

Wasp Control FAQ

Can you treat wasps the same day?
Yes. Same-day wasp treatment is available for most Brisbane suburbs when you call before midday on 0406 178 471. Nests near doorways, children's areas, and outdoor entertaining spaces are treated as priority emergencies. Call early for the best chance of same-day attendance.
How much does wasp nest removal cost in Brisbane?
Paper wasp nest removal from $220. European wasp treatment from $280 due to the additional safety equipment, nest scale, and mandatory biosecurity reporting. Mud wasp tube removal from $180. Multiple nests on the same property are typically discounted on the second and subsequent nests.
What do I do if someone has an anaphylactic reaction to a wasp sting?
Call 000 immediately. Use an EpiPen if available. Lay the person flat with legs raised unless they are having difficulty breathing. Symptoms of anaphylaxis include difficulty breathing, throat swelling, rapid pulse, and dizziness. Do not leave them alone. This is a medical emergency requiring immediate ambulance attendance. For non-anaphylactic stings, clean the area, apply a cold pack, and take an antihistamine.
Is it safe to treat a wasp nest myself?
For small mud wasp tubes, DIY scraping is safe as mud wasps are non-aggressive. For paper wasp nests and any European or yellow jacket nests, professional treatment with protective equipment is strongly recommended. Consumer spray requires close approach to an active colony. Surviving wasps from a partially treated nest are more aggressive, not less.
Are European wasps dangerous in Brisbane?
Yes. European wasps are more dangerous than any native wasp in Brisbane. A colony can reach 100,000 workers. They will sting with minimal provocation at several metres from the nest and can sting repeatedly. They are a Biosecurity Queensland reportable species. Do not approach or attempt to treat a suspected European wasp nest yourself. See our European wasp page.
Will wasps come back after the nest is removed?
Once a nest is treated and removed, the existing colony will not rebuild. New colonies may establish at the same site in future seasons if conditions are favourable. Applying a residual surface spray to the previous nest location after removal reduces the chance of re-establishment. Under-eave paper wasp re-establishment is the most common recurring situation in Brisbane.
What if there is a wasp nest inside a wall?
Wall cavity wasp nests are treated with insecticidal dust applied through the entry gap. Unlike bee comb, wasp nest material left inside a wall after the colony is eliminated does not cause ongoing damage, ferment, or attract other pests. Physical removal of the nest from inside the wall is only required if the wall is being opened for other reasons.
