Identifying European Wasps

Identifying European Wasps in Brisbane

European wasps are frequently confused with paper wasps and yellow jackets. The identification points below are the key distinguishing features. If you are not certain, call 0406 178 471 and describe what you see or send a photograph.

Bright yellow and black banding

European wasps have bright, clean yellow and black banding on the abdomen. Markings are distinct and symmetrical. Less orange or brown than paper wasps.

Compact, smooth body (12-17mm)

European wasps are heavier and more compact than paper wasps. They do not dangle their legs in flight. Flight is fast and direct, not the slow leg-dangling flight pattern of paper wasps.

Ground or enclosed nest

European wasp nests are enclosed, paper-like structures in the ground, wall cavities, roof voids, or rock crevices. Not the open umbrella shape of paper wasp nests. Entry is a small hole with wasps flying in and out continuously.

High traffic at entry point

A large established European wasp nest has constant traffic of dozens of workers per minute at the entry point. This level of activity is higher than any paper wasp nest and is itself a reliable identification indicator.

EU Wasp: dust insecticide only
Why European Wasps Are the Highest-Risk Species in Brisbane

Why European Wasps Are Different from All Other Brisbane Wasps

Three biological factors make European wasps categorically more dangerous than native Brisbane wasp species. All three must be understood before approaching anywhere near a suspected nest.

100,000

Colony size

A mature European wasp nest (January-March in Brisbane) can contain up to 100,000 workers. A paper wasp colony has 20-200. The scale difference means a disturbed European wasp nest produces a defensive response that is impossible to escape without protective equipment.

Multiple

Stings per wasp

Unlike honey bees, European wasps can sting multiple times. Their stinger has no barb that lodges in skin, so each wasp can sting repeatedly. Each sting also releases an alarm pheromone that signals nearby workers to join the attack, rapidly escalating the situation.

Unprovoked

Sting trigger distance

Paper wasps sting defensively when their nest is closely approached (within 30-50cm). European wasps will sting people at several metres from the nest entry with little or no provocation. Even footsteps near a ground nest can trigger defensive stinging.

Biosecurity QLD Reporting

Biosecurity Queensland Reporting Requirement

European wasps are a declared pest under the Queensland Biosecurity Act 2014. Property owners who become aware of a European wasp nest have a general biosecurity obligation to report it. We handle the mandatory Biosecurity Queensland notification as part of our treatment service.

Why European Wasps Are a Biosecurity Species
Vespula germanica is not native to Australia. It was introduced from Europe and is spreading across Southeast Queensland. European wasps prey on honey bees, native bees, and other beneficial insects at scale. Large colonies near apiaries can devastate bee populations. The Biosecurity Act requires reporting to support the tracking and management of their spread.
1
You or your neighbour discovers a suspected European wasp nest. Do not disturb it.
2
Call 0406 178 471. We attend same-day in full protective equipment to confirm species identification.
3
Insecticidal dust applied to the nest entry. Workers carry the dust into the nest and the colony is eliminated within 24-48 hours.
4
We complete the Biosecurity Queensland notification on your behalf, which discharges your statutory obligation.
5
Follow-up assessment at 72 hours confirms colony elimination. Nest material removed where accessible.
Treatment Process

European Wasp Treatment Process

All European wasp treatment is conducted in full personal protective equipment. No consumer product provides adequate protection for treating a large European wasp nest. The treatment protocol is specific to nest location and access.

1

Species confirmed on arrival

European wasp vs yellow jacket vs paper wasp confirmed before treatment begins. Treatment method selected based on nest location: ground, wall cavity, roof void, or other structure.

2

Full protective equipment donned

Full bee suit, gloves, and sealed footwear. No shortcuts on personal protection for European wasp treatment regardless of nest size or apparent activity level.

3

Dust applied at nest entrance

Insecticidal dust (Permethrin or Carbaryl) applied to the nest entry at a safe working distance using an extension duster. Foraging workers returning to the nest carry the dust inside. Dust is distributed through the nest by worker activity.

4

Area cleared and secured

The immediate nest area is cleared of people and marked. Workers may be agitated for 30-60 minutes after initial treatment as the dust takes effect. Area access should remain restricted until the technician confirms it is safe to return.

5

Biosecurity QLD notification

Mandatory notification to Biosecurity Queensland completed by the technician as part of the service. This discharges the property owner's statutory obligation under the Biosecurity Act 2014.

6

72-hour follow-up

Return visit at 72 hours confirms colony elimination. Further dust application if any activity remains. Nest material removed from accessible ground nests once confirmed inactive.

Sting First Aid

European Wasp Sting First Aid

European wasp stings are more painful and more numerous than bee stings in a typical encounter. Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency that requires immediate action.

Normal Sting Reaction
Move away from the nest area immediately
Unlike bees, wasps do not leave a stinger. No extraction needed.
Wash the sting site with soap and water
Apply a cold pack to reduce pain and swelling
Take an oral antihistamine to reduce local reaction
Monitor for any signs of allergic reaction over the next 30 minutes
Anaphylactic Reaction: Call 000 Immediately
Signs: difficulty breathing, throat or tongue swelling, rapid pulse, dizziness, loss of consciousness
Call 000 immediately. Do not wait for symptoms to worsen.
Use an EpiPen (adrenaline auto-injector) if one is available
Lay the person flat with legs raised unless they have breathing difficulty, in which case sit them upright
Do not leave the person alone. Stay with them until the ambulance arrives.

FAQ

European Wasp FAQ

Why are European wasps more dangerous than paper wasps?
Three factors. Colony size: up to 100,000 workers vs 200 in a paper wasp nest. Aggression: European wasps sting at several metres distance with minimal provocation, whereas paper wasps only sting when the nest is closely approached. Alarm pheromone: each European wasp sting releases a chemical signal that recruits nearby workers to join the attack, escalating the situation rapidly.
Can European wasps sting multiple times?
Yes. Their stinger has no barb that lodges in skin, so each wasp can sting multiple times without dying. Unlike honey bees, which die after stinging, a European wasp can sting repeatedly. Each sting releases an alarm pheromone signalling nearby workers, so a single disturbed wasp can trigger an attack involving dozens or hundreds of workers within seconds.
Do I have to report European wasps?
Yes. European wasps are a declared pest under the Queensland Biosecurity Act 2014. Property owners who are aware of a European wasp nest have a general biosecurity obligation to report it and take reasonable action to manage it. We complete the mandatory Biosecurity Queensland notification on your behalf as part of our treatment service, discharging your statutory obligation.
How much does European wasp treatment cost in Brisbane?
Ground nest treatment costs $280-$340 including full protective equipment, dust application, Biosecurity Queensland notification, and 72-hour follow-up. Roof void or wall cavity nests with difficult access cost $340-$420. Call 0406 178 471 for a specific quote based on nest location and access.
What do I do if I find a European wasp nest?
Do not approach, spray, or block the nest entrance. Keep children and pets at least 20 metres clear of the nest area. Note or photograph the nest location from a safe distance. Call 0406 178 471 immediately for same-day treatment. Do not attempt DIY treatment under any circumstances.
