Brisbane Possum Species

Possum Species Found in Brisbane Homes

Two possum species are common in Brisbane suburbs. Only one regularly enters roof voids. Identifying which species you have determines whether roof exclusion is the right approach.

Common Brushtail Possum
Trichosurus vulpecula

The species almost always responsible for roof void noise in Brisbane. Solitary, territorial, and active at night. Produces loud thumping, scrabbling, and scratching sounds in roof voids that can wake residents. Will return repeatedly to the same entry point if not excluded. Well adapted to urban environments with large territories centred on one or two den sites, often a roof void.

Weight1.5-4.5kg
TailBushy. Used for gripping.
Roof void?Yes. Primary entry species.
ActivityNocturnal. Exits at dusk.
Common Ringtail Possum
Pseudocheirus peregrinus

Smaller and more arboreal than the brushtail. Builds a ball-shaped nest (drey) of leaves and bark in dense garden shrubs, tree forks, and dense vine growth. Rarely enters roof voids. If you have noise in the roof, it is almost certainly a brushtail. If you have a leaf nest the size of a football in a garden shrub or frangipani, it is likely ringtail. Ringtails do not need roof exclusion treatment; garden management is sufficient if they are causing garden damage.

QPWS Compliance Requirements

What Queensland Law Requires for Possum Removal

Understanding the legal requirements prevents property owners from taking actions that are technically illegal and practically counterproductive. Exclusion rather than relocation is the recommended and legally compliant long-term approach.

Humane trapping only

Only wire cage traps designed for safe possum capture may be used. Snap traps, poison, or any method that causes harm is illegal. Trapped possums must be checked within 24 hours and released promptly.

Release within 50 metres

Queensland regulations require possums to be released on the property where they were caught, or within 50 metres. Long-distance relocation is an offence under the Nature Conservation Act 1992 and causes welfare harm.

Exclusion is the permanent solution

Trapping and releasing the same possum repeatedly (or releasing it back into the garden while the entry is still open) achieves nothing. Permanent roof exclusion via one-way gates and entry sealing is the only approach that ends the problem.

Common Roof Entry Points

How Possums Enter Brisbane Roof Voids

Brushtail possums are persistent and strong enough to widen a small gap into a usable entry. Finding all entry points before beginning exclusion work is the critical step. A missed entry point means the possum simply uses an alternative entry after the primary one is sealed.

Damaged fascia boards

Rot or impact damage to fascia timber creates gaps between fascia and rafter end that possums exploit.

Hip-end tiles and ridge caps

Deteriorated pointing at hip ends and ridge caps leaves open gaps into the roof void accessible from the roofline.

Eave junction gaps

The junction between the eave lining and the wall cladding often has small gaps in older Queensland construction that open over time.

AC duct penetrations

Air conditioning duct penetrations through the eave or fascia area with inadequate weatherproofing are common entry points in newer Brisbane homes.

Subfloor vents

Missing or damaged subfloor vent covers on older homes provide access to the subfloor void, which possums also use as an alternative den site.

Tree branch access

Overhanging tree branches reaching within 1.5 metres of the roof provide a launch point. Branch trimming removes the access pathway before exclusion.

Treatment Process

Possum Removal and Exclusion Process

Effective possum control follows a defined sequence. Rushing to seal without first confirming the possum is out of the roof is the most common DIY mistake, with serious animal welfare consequences.

1

Roof void and exterior inspection

Full inspection of the exterior roofline to identify all entry points. Internal roof void inspection to confirm possum presence, assess extent of use, and identify any structural damage caused by the animal.

2

Tree branch assessment and trimming advice

Access pathways assessed. Overhanging branches within 1.5 metres of the roof are identified. Branch trimming removes the primary access route before exclusion work begins. Branch trimming is not included in the pest control scope but referral to a qualified arborist is provided.

3

One-way gate installation

A one-way exclusion gate is fitted over the primary entry point. The possum can exit at night via the one-way mechanism but cannot re-enter. The gate remains in place for 5-7 nights to confirm the possum has vacated and is not re-entering. This is the critical confirmation step before permanent sealing.

4

Possum confirmed absent

After 5-7 nights with no signs of re-entry, the possum is confirmed as having vacated the roof void. Noise monitoring plus daytime roof void inspection confirms absence. Do not proceed to permanent sealing until absence is confirmed.

5

Permanent entry sealing

All identified entry points sealed with appropriate materials: galvanised mesh for large gaps at eave junctions and fascia ends; roof pointing compound for hip end and ridge cap gaps; purpose-cut timber infill for fascia damage; custom fabricated steel mesh for AC duct penetrations. All sealing materials selected for outdoor durability in Brisbane's UV environment.

6

Possum nesting box provision (optional)

Brushtail possums require an alternative den site after exclusion from the roof void. A possum nesting box installed in an appropriate tree in the garden provides an alternative territory anchor. Without an alternative den site, the possum may attempt to regain roof access more persistently. Nesting box supply and installation available at additional cost.

Do not seal roof entry points before confirming the possum is out
A possum sealed inside the roof cannot escape. It will cause significant structural damage attempting to exit and will eventually die inside the roof void, creating a decomposition and odour issue that requires costly remediation. The one-way gate step is not optional. This is the most common cause of welfare and property damage in DIY possum exclusion attempts.

FAQ

Possum Control FAQ

Is it legal to remove possums from a roof in Queensland?
You can trap and release possums, but only within 50 metres of the capture site. Possums are protected under the Nature Conservation Act 1992. Long-distance relocation is illegal and causes welfare harm. Roof exclusion via one-way gates and entry sealing is the legally compliant and most effective long-term solution. Harming or killing possums is an offence.
How much does possum removal cost in Brisbane?
Inspection and trap-and-release from $380. One-way gate installation from $220. Full roof exclusion and permanent entry sealing from $480 for a standard suburban house. Complex rooflines with multiple entry points are priced on inspection. Call 0406 178 471 for a specific quote.
Can I block a possum out of my roof myself?
Yes, but the one-way gate step must not be skipped. If you seal the entry while the possum is inside the roof, the animal cannot exit, will cause significant structural damage trying to escape, and will die inside the roof. Install a one-way gate first, wait 5-7 nights to confirm the possum has left and is not re-entering, then seal permanently. This sequence is non-negotiable.
Why does the possum keep coming back after I seal the roof?
Re-entry after sealing almost always means a secondary entry point was missed. Brushtail possums know their territory and will test every possible entry point. Common missed entry points: damaged ridge capping, gaps at fascia-rafter junctions, terra cotta hip end tiles with deteriorated pointing, and subfloor vent covers. A thorough inspection before sealing identifies all entry points.
What is a possum one-way gate?
A one-way gate is fitted over the possum's entry point. The possum can push out at night to forage but cannot push back in. After 2-4 nights, the possum accepts the loss of that entry and seeks alternative shelter. The entry point is then permanently sealed. One-way gates are recommended over trap-and-release for established territory animals because they avoid the stress of trapping and the challenge of releasing back into the same territory.
What is the difference between brushtail and ringtail possums?
Brushtail possums are larger (up to 4.5kg) with a bushy tail and are the species found in roof voids. They cause the thumping and scrabbling noises at night. Ringtail possums are smaller (under 1kg) with a prehensile white-tipped tail and build leaf nests in garden shrubs. If the noise is inside the roof, it is a brushtail. If there is a football-sized leaf nest in a dense garden shrub, it is a ringtail.
