How We Make Treatment Safe for Your Family
Child and pet safe pest control is not about avoiding all products. It is about choosing the right products for the household, applying them to surfaces and voids that children and pets cannot access, and confirming safe re-entry before the family returns.
Low-Toxicity Products
All products are APVMA-registered and selected for low mammalian toxicity. Gel bait and diatomaceous earth have toxicity profiles that make accidental exposure by children or pets at realistic exposure levels a very low risk. Surface spray is applied at label rates that present minimal risk once dry.
Targeted Application
Products are applied to cupboard bases, wall junctions, subfloor voids, and external perimeter surfaces. We avoid spray application on floors, low surfaces, and areas where infants or pets spend time crawling and resting. Gel bait is placed inside cupboard hinges and under appliances out of child and pet reach.
Confirmed Re-Entry
The technician confirms the specific re-entry time for the products used before leaving. Children, pets, and vulnerable occupants are told exactly when they can return to each area. Re-entry is not a guess: it is based on the specific product label and the observed drying conditions on the day.
Products We Use and Their Safety Profiles
Every product we use is registered with the APVMA (Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority). The table below shows the key products used in family-safe programs and their safety classification for children and pets.
| Product | Type | Child Safety | Dog / Cat | Birds | Fish Tanks |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fipronil gel bait (Maxforce, Goliath) | Gel bait | Safe when dry | Safe when dry | Safe | No risk |
| Bifenthrin 100SC (Biflex) | Synthetic pyrethroid spray | Safe when dry (1-2 hrs) | Safe when dry | Remove during spray | Cover during spray |
| Diatomaceous earth | Mineral dust | Very low risk | Very low risk | Safe | No risk |
| Pyrethrin (natural) | Botanical spray | Safe when dry | Safe when dry | Remove during spray | Cover during spray |
| Boric acid dust | Mineral dust | Avoid direct contact (under 3) | Safe as applied | Safe | No risk |
All safety ratings are for standard residential application rates. "Safe when dry" means safe once the product has dried to touch, typically 30-60 minutes under Brisbane conditions. See our eco-friendly page for full product origin details.
Child and Pet Safe Treatment Methods
We use four main treatment methods in family-safe programs. The right combination depends on the pest, the property, and the specific household situation.
Gel Bait
Gel bait is the safest application method for family households. Small amounts of bait are placed inside cupboard hinges, behind kickboards, under appliances, and in other locations children and pets cannot access. Cockroaches and ants feed on the bait and carry it back to the colony. No surface exposure to occupants at all. Preferred method for nurseries, kitchens with young children, and households with pets that lick floors.
Contained Baiting Stations
Tamper-resistant baiting stations for rodent control are locked and cannot be opened by children or pets. Stations are secured at the perimeter and in areas where rodent activity is detected. The bait is inaccessible without the technician's key. Stations are inspected and refilled at each scheduled visit. Suitable for homes with toddlers, dogs, and cats.
Targeted Low-Residual Spray
Where spray is the right method, we use low-toxicity pyrethroid formulations applied in a fine targeted pattern to skirting boards, wall junctions, and external perimeter only. Spray is not applied to floors, low furniture surfaces, or pet bedding areas. Family and pets vacate during application and return after the 1-2 hour drying period confirmed by the technician.
Diatomaceous Earth Dust
Diatomaceous earth is a natural mineral dust applied to roof voids, subfloor, wall voids, and other inaccessible cavities. It kills insects mechanically rather than chemically and presents essentially no toxicity risk to mammals. Suitable for households where any chemical exposure is a concern, including families with infants, immune-compromised occupants, or clients who prefer fully natural treatment.
Re-Entry Times for Children and Pets
Re-entry times apply once treated surfaces are fully dry. Drying time depends on the product, the surface, and Brisbane humidity and ventilation on the day. The technician confirms the specific re-entry time before leaving.
Pet-Specific Guidance
Different pets have different sensitivities. Here is specific guidance for each common household pet type. Tell us what pets you have when you book and we will adjust the treatment approach accordingly.
Dogs
Dogs can return to treated areas 1-2 hours after treatment once surfaces are dry. Modern pyrethroid products at residential concentrations are safe for dogs. Dogs should not be allowed to lick freshly sprayed surfaces before they are dry. Tamper-resistant rodent stations are used in homes with dogs.
Cats
Cats have higher sensitivity to concentrated pyrethroids than dogs. At residential spray concentrations the risk is low, but cats should not re-enter until surfaces are fully dry. Cats should not lick or walk on freshly sprayed surfaces. We can use gel bait-only treatments for cat-sensitive households on request.
Birds
Birds are the most sensitive to airborne chemicals. They must be removed from the property before any spray treatment, eco-friendly or conventional. They can return once the property is fully ventilated and surfaces are dry. Gel bait and dust treatments can be conducted with birds covered in another room.
Fish
Pyrethroid products are toxic to fish and aquatic life at very low concentrations. Fish tanks must be covered with a tight-fitting cover and air pumps turned off before any spray treatment. Tanks can be uncovered and pumps restarted 2-3 hours after treatment once the spray has dried and the room is ventilated.
Reptiles
Reptiles are sensitive to many pesticides. Remove reptile enclosures from the treatment area or cover tightly before any spray treatment. Confirm the specific product with us before booking if you keep reptiles. Gel bait-only treatments are the safest approach for reptile households.
Small Animals (Rabbits, Guinea Pigs)
Small animals should be removed or their enclosures covered and moved to an untreated area before any spray treatment. They can return once the property is ventilated and surfaces are confirmed dry. Gel bait and dust treatments in wall voids and roof space present no risk to small animals in enclosures.
Child and Pet Safe Pest Control Pricing
Child and pet safe treatment is the same price as standard treatment. There is no premium for requesting low-toxicity or gel-bait-only programs. Tell us your household situation when booking and we match the right method at no extra cost.
