Common School Pests

Common School and Education Pests

Schools present specific pest pressures that other commercial buildings do not face: large outdoor areas, canteen food waste, a high volume of small entry points across many buildings, and the presence of children who must not be exposed to chemical treatments. Each pest below is managed with methods appropriate to a school environment.

Ants in Classrooms and Tuck Shops

Ants are the most reported pest in Queensland schools. Sugar ants trail from outdoor areas through building perimeters into classrooms and tuck shops, drawn by crumbs, drink residue, and fruit. Colony-targeting bait is applied to entry points and trail areas during the holiday period. No spray in classrooms. See our ant control page.

Cockroaches in Canteen Kitchens

School canteen kitchens face the same cockroach pressures as commercial food operations. German cockroaches in kitchen equipment voids, American cockroaches from building drains. Gel bait in all harborage sites during holiday periods. Canteen kitchens treated the same way as any commercial kitchen environment.

Rodents in Storage and Music Rooms

Mice target music room instrument cases, art supply storage, and science lab storage areas. Rats access through building service entries and loading dock areas. Tamper-resistant bait stations placed in non-student accessible storage areas and service entries. Stations checked and refilled on each term-break visit.

Wasps in Outdoor Areas

European wasps and paper wasps nest under playground shade structures, in garden beds, along fence lines, and in building eaves. Any active wasp nest near a student area is treated as an urgent callout. A wasp nest discovered during term requires same-day response. See our wasp control page.

Blue Card Compliance

Blue Card Compliance

Under the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000 (QLD), all persons who provide services to children in a school environment are required to hold a current Blue Card. This includes pest control technicians entering school premises during operating hours.

All Technicians Hold a Current Blue Card

We do not send technicians to schools without a valid Blue Card. Cards are renewed before expiry and copies are provided with the service report on request for inclusion in school contractor files. This requirement applies to all school visits, including holiday-period treatments where students are not present.

Blue Card copies on request
QLD PMT licence copies provided
Police clearance certificates available
$20M public liability insurance
All credentials kept current and renewed proactively
Documentation formatted for school contractor files
Holiday-Period Scheduling

Holiday-Period Treatment Schedule

The standard school pest control program treats at each term break. This gives four full-access treatment windows per year, timed so that products are completely dry well before students and staff return at the start of the next term. See our child-safe treatment page.

Term 1
Jan holidays end

Full-facility treatment at the end of the January holiday period. Sets pest protection for the longest term.

January
Term 2
Easter break

Treatment during the Easter holiday break. Two-week window provides full access to all buildings.

April
Term 3
July holidays

Mid-year holiday treatment. Addresses any increase in ant and cockroach activity that builds during the warmer second term.

July
Term 4
September break

Pre-summer treatment ahead of Brisbane's highest pest pressure season. Sets protection through the long December holiday period.

September
Treatment dates confirmed at the start of each school year. We manage the scheduling calendar and send reminders before each holiday visit. Emergency wasp or rodent treatment during term is available outside this schedule.
What We Cover

Classroom, Canteen & Sports Facility Coverage

Every area of a school has a different pest profile. Treatment covers the full campus, not just the buildings with visible pest activity. Consistent coverage across all areas prevents movement from untreated zones into treated ones.

Classrooms

Gel bait at skirting boards, window sills, and under furniture. Spray applied to external walls and corridors. No spray inside classrooms.

Canteen Kitchen

Gel bait in equipment voids. Spray in non-food areas. Drain enzyme treatment. Same standard as a commercial kitchen.

Admin and Staff Areas

Staff room, admin offices, and meeting rooms treated with residual spray to skirting boards and internal perimeter.

Toilets and Changerooms

Internal and external spray including under sinks, cisterns, and floor drain surrounds. Silverfish and cockroach focus.

Oval and Sports Facilities

Perimeter spray to change shed bases and storage areas. Wasp nest inspection under shade structures and grandstands.

Building Perimeters

Full external spray to all building perimeters, garden bed edges, bin areas, and loading dock. External barrier applied each visit.

Universities and TAFE

University & TAFE Campus Coverage

Tertiary campuses present a larger and more complex treatment environment than primary and secondary schools. Multiple food outlets, student accommodation, large research and lab facilities, and year-round occupation mean treatment must be more flexible than a simple four-times-a-year school program.

University Treatment Areas

Food courts and commercial kitchen areas
Student accommodation (individual room programs available)
Library, lecture theatres, and common areas
Science and research labs (non-liquid methods in lab areas)
Loading dock and waste management areas

TAFE Campus Treatment Areas

Commercial kitchen training facilities
Workshop and trade training areas
Common rooms and student lounges
Administration and faculty buildings
External perimeter and car parks

FAQ

School Pest Control FAQ

Do your technicians have Blue Cards for school work?
Yes. All technicians working in schools, TAFE campuses, and education facilities hold a valid Queensland Blue Card. Copies are available with the service report on request for inclusion in school contractor files. We do not send technicians without a current Blue Card to any education facility.
Can you treat during school holidays?
Yes. The standard school program treats at each term-break holiday period, giving four full-access treatment windows per year. This provides unrestricted access to all areas without scheduling around teaching or student presence. Products are dry well before the start of the next term. Emergency wasp and rodent treatment during term is available outside the standard schedule.
Are treatments safe for children?
Yes. We use APVMA-registered, low-toxicity products applied only during holiday periods when students are not on site. Products are dry before the school reopens. No spray is applied inside classrooms. Gel bait is the primary method used in all student-use areas. See our child-safe treatment page for product details.
Do you treat classrooms and play areas?
Yes. Treatment covers classrooms, canteen and tuck shop areas, science labs, admin buildings, staff rooms, toilet blocks, change sheds, sports facility perimeters, outdoor play areas, shade structures, sandpit surrounds, and all building external perimeters. The full campus is treated on each visit, not just the areas with reported activity.
How often should schools be treated?
Four visits per year, one per term break, is the recommended program for most Queensland schools. This maintains continuous protection across the full school year. Canteen kitchens with higher pest pressure, or schools in areas with significant bushland, may benefit from an additional targeted treatment at the start of summer. Universities and TAFE campuses may require more frequent treatment depending on food outlet density.
Do you handle wasp and bee removal in school playgrounds?
Yes. Wasp nest removal in playgrounds, under shade structures, in garden beds, and on school buildings is treated as an urgent priority for any school on a contract. Same-day or next-morning response for active wasp nests reported near student areas. Call 0406 178 471 directly for urgent wasp situations during term. Bee swarms are treated differently to wasp nests and we advise on the best approach on the day.
