What Makes It Eco-Friendly

What Makes Eco-Friendly Pest Control Different

Eco-friendly pest control is not about weaker treatment. It is about choosing products derived from natural sources, targeting applications precisely, and avoiding residues that persist in soil, water, or air longer than needed. Three principles define our eco-friendly approach.

Natural-Origin Products

Active ingredients derived from plants and minerals rather than synthesised chemicals. Pyrethrin from chrysanthemum flowers. Diatomaceous earth from silica deposits. Boric acid from naturally occurring borax minerals. All APVMA-registered for Australian pest control use.

Targeted Application

Products are applied only to harborage sites, entry points, and pest travel paths. No broadcast spraying of entire rooms or garden areas. Targeted gel bait, dust application, and perimeter spot treatment minimise the volume of product used and the surface area exposed.

Rapid Environmental Breakdown

Eco-friendly products break down more rapidly in the environment than synthetic alternatives. Pyrethrin degrades in sunlight within hours to days. Diatomaceous earth is an inert mineral that does not leach into groundwater. Boric acid has low persistence outside the treated area.

Products We Use

Eco-Friendly Products We Use

These are the specific products used in our eco-friendly treatment program. All are APVMA-registered for use in Australia and have been selected for both their effectiveness and their environmental profile.

Plant-Derived

Pyrethrin

Derived from: Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium flowers

Pyrethrin is one of the oldest insecticides in use and remains one of the most effective natural options. It acts on the nervous system of insects, causing rapid knockdown. It is registered for use against cockroaches, ants, flies, fleas, and spiders. It degrades rapidly in sunlight and has very low mammalian toxicity.

Target pests:Cockroaches, ants, flies, fleas, spiders
Residual:Hours to 1-2 days (degrades in UV)
Mammal toxicity:Very low
Mineral-Derived

Diatomaceous Earth

Derived from: Fossilised silica algae (diatoms)

Diatomaceous earth (DE) is a naturally occurring, soft siliceous sedimentary rock. When insects walk through DE, the microscopic sharp particles damage their exoskeleton and cause them to dehydrate. It is effective against cockroaches, silverfish, ants, bed bugs, and other crawling insects. It does not involve chemical toxicity.

Target pests:Cockroaches, silverfish, ants, bed bugs
Residual:Months (when kept dry)
Mammal toxicity:None (food grade available)
Mineral-Derived

Boric Acid

Derived from: Naturally occurring borax mineral deposits

Boric acid is a mineral compound used in pest control for over a century. It acts as a stomach poison in insects, disrupting their digestive system when ingested through contact with treated surfaces. Particularly effective against cockroaches and ants when used as a bait carrier or wall void dust. Low persistence outside the treated zone.

Target pests:Cockroaches, ants, silverfish
Residual:Long-lasting when dry
Mammal toxicity:Low (keep away from children directly)
Plant-Derived

Botanical Oils

Derived from: Clove, thyme, rosemary, and tea tree plants

Essential oil-based formulations used as targeted contact insecticides and repellents. Effective as a surface treatment for ants and as a spray component for external perimeter treatment. Degrade rapidly in the environment and have no residue concerns on treated surfaces once dry.

Target pests:Ants, spiders, silverfish
Residual:Short (1-3 days)
Mammal toxicity:Very low
Effectiveness

Eco-Friendly vs Conventional: Effectiveness Comparison

The honest answer is that eco-friendly products perform very well for most residential situations and are suitable for the large majority of Brisbane pest requests. There are specific situations where conventional products remain the better choice.

Eco-Friendly Treatment

Works Well For

Standard residential pest pressure in Brisbane homes, units, and apartments. Preventive and maintenance treatments. Child and pet-sensitive households. Organic gardens and households with heavy outdoor planting.

General household ants, cockroaches, spiders
Silverfish in books, papers, and wardrobes
Preventive perimeter treatments
Maintenance after initial conventional knockdown
Mild cockroach infestations (may need repeat)
When Conventional May Be Needed

Specific Situations

For a small number of situations, eco-friendly products may not achieve the required result on their own. In these cases we will advise upfront rather than after a failed treatment.

Severe German cockroach infestations in commercial kitchens
Active termite colonies (require registered termiticide)
Large rodent infestations requiring baiting programs
Fire ant treatment (requires approved chemical protocols)

Child, Pet & Garden Safety

Child, Pet & Garden Safety

The safety profile of eco-friendly products is the main reason many Brisbane households and commercial operators choose them. Here is what the data shows for each group. See our child and pet safe page for more detail.

Children

Pyrethrin has a mammalian LD50 that is orders of magnitude higher than in insects, meaning the dose required to cause harm in humans is far above any exposure possible from a normal treatment. Diatomaceous earth is classified as a nuisance dust and is used as an anti-caking agent in food products. Boric acid dust should be kept out of reach of young children but is not acutely toxic at dust exposure levels. We keep all products away from child contact surfaces.

Pets

Pyrethrin is safe for dogs and cats at the concentrations used in pest control. Cats are sensitive to pyrethroids (synthetic versions) but have a higher tolerance for natural pyrethrin. Diatomaceous earth is safe for mammals but should not be inhaled in large quantities. All pets should be kept out of the treatment area while products are wet and until surfaces are dry.

Gardens and Vegetables

Eco-friendly treatments are applied to building perimeters and entry points, not to vegetable patches or garden beds. Pyrethrin degrades rapidly in sunlight and does not accumulate in soil. Diatomaceous earth is inert in soil. We advise where we are applying products before starting so you can protect any specific garden areas of concern.

Aquatic Life

Pyrethrin is toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates at low concentrations. Fish tanks must be covered during any treatment, eco-friendly or conventional. We do not apply any product near ponds, water features, or aquariums. Diatomaceous earth and boric acid applied as dry treatments present no aquatic risk when used as directed.

Pollinator-Friendly Approach

Our Pollinator-Friendly Approach

Pyrethrin affects all insects including bees on direct contact. This is a limitation of any pyrethrin-based product and is true of both eco-friendly and conventional treatments. Our approach minimises this risk through timing and targeting.

How We Protect Pollinators
We apply treatment to building surfaces, skirting boards, and entry points, not to flowering plants, garden beds, or areas where bees forage.
No product applied to flowering plants or garden beds
Pyrethrin applied only to building surfaces and entry points
External treatments done early morning or late afternoon to avoid peak bee activity
Diatomaceous earth and boric acid used as primary treatments in garden-adjacent areas
A Note on Bee Swarms

If bees are present in or near the treatment area, we will not proceed with any spray treatment. Bee swarms are not treated. We will advise on contacting a local bee keeper for relocation. See our wasp page for the difference between bees and wasps and how we handle each.

FAQ

Eco-Friendly Pest Control FAQ

Is eco-friendly pest control as effective as standard treatment?
For most Brisbane residential situations yes. Pyrethrin, diatomaceous earth, and boric acid are effective against cockroaches, ants, spiders, and silverfish. The main practical difference is that eco-friendly products have a shorter residual period and may require more frequent application to maintain protection. For severe infestations or termites, conventional products may be required for the initial knockdown. We advise upfront if the infestation warrants a different approach.
Does eco-friendly pest control cost more?
No. Eco-friendly treatment is the same price as standard treatment. There is no premium for choosing plant-based or low-toxicity products. Simply let us know when booking that you want eco-friendly products and we will bring the appropriate products at no additional charge.
What makes a product eco-friendly?
Products are considered eco-friendly when they come from natural sources (plants or minerals), break down more rapidly in the environment, have a lower toxicity profile for mammals and non-target organisms, and do not accumulate in soil or water. Pyrethrin is extracted from chrysanthemum flowers. Diatomaceous earth is a naturally occurring mineral. Boric acid is a mineral compound. All are APVMA-registered for pest control in Australia.
Is eco-friendly pest control really safe for kids and pets?
Yes. Products like pyrethrin, diatomaceous earth, and botanical oils have a very low mammalian toxicity profile. They are significantly less likely to cause any adverse reaction in children or pets than synthetic pyrethroids. We still recommend keeping children and pets out of the treatment area while products are wet. See our child and pet safe page for full product details.
Can eco-friendly methods handle a serious infestation?
For most residential infestations, yes. A severe German cockroach infestation in a commercial kitchen or active termite colony may require conventional products for the initial knockdown treatment, with eco-friendly products used for ongoing maintenance once the population is under control. We will advise honestly if the infestation level warrants a different first-step approach.
Are your treatments safe for bees and pollinators?
We do not apply any treatment to flowering plants or areas where bees are actively foraging. All pyrethrin treatment is applied to building surfaces, skirting boards, and entry points only. External treatment is timed to avoid peak bee activity periods. Diatomaceous earth and boric acid used as dry targeted treatments have minimal impact on pollinators.
What is IPM and is it the same as eco-friendly pest control?
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a framework that uses monitoring, prevention, and targeted treatment to minimise chemical use. Eco-friendly products are one component of an IPM approach. IPM starts with exclusion and habitat modification, moves to targeted low-toxicity treatment, and uses conventional chemicals only when necessary. Our eco-friendly program uses IPM principles throughout.
Are the products truly natural or just lower toxicity chemicals?
Both categories exist in our eco program. Pyrethrin is extracted directly from chrysanthemum flowers and is a genuine natural product. Diatomaceous earth is a naturally occurring mineral. Boric acid is a mineral compound found in nature. Botanical oil products use plant-derived actives. All are APVMA-registered and applied at defined rates. Natural origin does not automatically mean zero toxicity, but these products have a significantly better environmental profile than synthetic alternatives.
