Spray Products We Use

The product used depends on the target pest, the treatment zone, and client preference. All products are APVMA-registered for use in Australia and are applied at the label rate using calibrated equipment.

Synthetic

Synthetic Pyrethroids

The most widely used class of insecticide for residential pest control. Derived synthetically from the natural pyrethrin molecule but engineered for longer residual activity. Products include Bifenthrin (Biflex), Permethrin, and Deltamethrin. Highly effective against cockroaches, ants, spiders, and silverfish with 3-6 month residual on internal surfaces.

Key products:Biflex AquaMax, Permethrin 50EC
Residual:3-6 months internal
Best for:General household pests
Neonicotinoid

Neonicotinoids

A newer class of systemic insecticide used for pests that have developed resistance to pyrethroids. Imidacloprid and Acetamiprid are the most common formulations used in pest control. Particularly effective for German cockroach infestations where pyrethroid resistance is established, and as a complement to gel bait programs in commercial kitchens.

Key products:Imidacloprid, Acetamiprid
Residual:2-4 months
Best for:Resistant cockroaches, targeted use
Eco-Friendly

Pyrethrin (Natural)

The natural plant-derived equivalent of synthetic pyrethroids, extracted from chrysanthemum flowers. Used when clients request an eco-friendly option. Provides fast knockdown but shorter residual than synthetic alternatives. Suitable for general household pest situations where frequent retreatment is not a concern. Same pricing as synthetic options. See our eco-friendly page.

Key products:Pyrethrin-based formulations
Residual:Hours to 1-2 days
Best for:Eco-sensitive households
Growth Regulator

Insect Growth Regulators (IGRs)

IGRs do not kill adult insects directly. They disrupt the development of immature insects, preventing juveniles from reaching reproductive maturity. Used alongside spray treatments to break the breeding cycle and prevent reinfestation. Hydroprene and Pyriproxyfen are the most common IGR actives used in Australian pest control.

Key products:Hydroprene, Pyriproxyfen
Residual:3-6 months
Best for:Cockroaches, fleas, silverfish
Treatment Zones

Where We Spray

A standard treatment covers all zones relevant to the property type and pest situation. Not all zones are included in every job. The technician will advise which zones are being treated and why before starting.

Internal Surfaces

Skirting boards, wall-floor junctions, cupboard bases, under appliances, wet area junctions, and entry points from ceiling space. The primary harborage zone for cockroaches and ants.

Synthetic pyrethroid or pyrethrin

External Perimeter

All external walls to 1 metre height, window frames, door frames, weep holes, and service penetrations. Targets ants and spiders entering from outside and creates a barrier against reinfestation.

Biflex AquaMax, synthetic pyrethroid

Roof Void

Roof void spray targets German cockroaches, spiders, and silverfish nesting in insulation, joists, and roof framing. Roof void treatment is not included in every standard treatment and is quoted separately for houses where access is confirmed.

Residual pyrethroid dust or liquid

Subfloor

Subfloor spray targets spiders, cockroaches, and silverfish under timber-floor homes. Also used as part of termite barrier reapplication programs. Subfloor access is confirmed before quoting. Separate pricing applies.

Biflex or Termidor depending on purpose

Garden Perimeter

Ant nest treatment in garden beds adjacent to the structure, and external perimeter spray extended to garden paths and paved areas where ants are entering. Applied away from flowering plants and bee-active areas.

Fipronil granules or liquid pyrethroid

Commercial Areas

Back-of-house, storage, plant rooms, loading docks, and refuse areas on commercial properties. Higher-pressure spray equipment used for large area coverage. HACCP-compliant documentation issued.

Synthetic pyrethroid or neonicotinoid
Equipment

Equipment and Calibration

Correct spray equipment and calibration are as important as product selection. An uncalibrated sprayer applying product at the wrong rate wastes product, reduces effectiveness, and may not comply with the APVMA label. All equipment is calibrated before use. See our equipment calibration page.

Backpack and Hand-Held Sprayers

Used for internal surface spray and external perimeter. Birchmeier and B&G units calibrated to deliver a consistent fine spray pattern at controlled pressure. Output confirmed before every treatment run.

ULV Cold Foggers

Used for roof void and subfloor treatments where fine mist penetration is required. Vectorfog units producing 5-50 micron droplets for even distribution across roof timbers and sub-floor joists.

Motorised Drum Sprayers

Used for large-area commercial treatments and external perimeter runs on larger properties. 20-litre motorised units with boom lance delivering high-volume application at consistent pressure across large surfaces.

Calibration Before Every Job

Every sprayer used on a treatment is calibrated before leaving the depot. Calibration confirms the output rate matches the APVMA label rate for the product being used. An uncalibrated sprayer is not just less effective: applying product above label rate is an offence under the Agricultural and Veterinary Chemicals Code.

Output rate confirmed in litres/min before use
Nozzle condition checked and replaced when worn
Pressure set to manufacturer specification
Annual calibration certificate maintained
Safe Re-Entry Times

Safe Re-Entry Times After Spraying

Re-entry time depends on the zone treated and the specific product used. The technician confirms the re-entry time for your specific treatment before leaving. The times below are standard guidelines for the products we most commonly use.

Internal Surfaces
1-2 hrs
Once surfaces are fully dry to touch. Open windows during this time to ventilate. Brisbane humidity affects drying time.
External Perimeter
30 min
Outdoor areas can be re-accessed after 30 minutes once the spray has been absorbed into surface materials.
Roof Void / Subfloor
Immediate
Living areas can be occupied during and after roof void and subfloor treatments. The treated space itself requires PPE for re-entry.
Spray vs Other Methods

When Spraying Is the Right Method

Spraying is the right choice for most Brisbane residential and commercial pest situations, but it is not always the only method and sometimes not the best. Here is how spray compares to other approaches.

Spray Treatment

Best When

General prevention and maintenance treatment
Broad surface coverage needed quickly
Multiple pest types to address in one visit
External perimeter barrier establishment
Roof void and subfloor zone treatment
Alternative Method May Be Better

When to Consider Alternatives

Bed bugs: heat treatment penetrates better than spray
Active termites: termiticide injection or baiting required
Commercial kitchen cockroaches: gel bait is preferred
Severe infestation with hidden voids: fumigation may be needed
Rodents: baiting and exclusion, not spraying

FAQ

Pest Control Spraying FAQ

How long after pest control spraying is it safe to re-enter?
Standard re-entry time is 1-2 hours for internal surfaces once fully dry. For external perimeter spray, 30 minutes is the standard. Roof void and subfloor treatments allow immediate re-entry to living areas. The technician will confirm the specific re-entry time for the products used before leaving.
Does the spray smell?
Modern synthetic pyrethroid sprays have very low odour and are not detectable by smell once dry. During application there is a faint chemical smell that clears within 30-60 minutes with ventilation. Eco-friendly botanical oil products may have a stronger plant-based scent initially, which also clears with ventilation.
Is the spray safe for children and pets?
Children and pets should be out of the treatment area during spraying and until surfaces are dry. Once dry, modern synthetic pyrethroid sprays present minimal risk at residential application concentrations. For households with infants or sensitive pets, we can use low-toxicity or pyrethrin formulations. See our child and pet safe page.
Should I clean before or after the treatment?
Clean before the treatment. A clean property allows the technician to access all areas and apply product to surfaces not coated in grease or residue. After treatment, avoid mopping skirting board areas and spray zones for 2-3 days to preserve residual activity. You can wipe benchtops and food-contact surfaces once the spray is dry.
How long does the spray treatment last?
Standard synthetic pyrethroid surface spray provides residual protection for 3-6 months under normal conditions. Brisbane's humidity and heat reduce residual life on external surfaces, which is why quarterly treatments are recommended for year-round coverage. Roof void and subfloor treatments typically last 6-12 months.
Can you spray inside cupboards?
Yes. Cockroaches and silverfish commonly harbour in cupboard bases, drawer joints, and wardrobe corners. We treat the base of internal cupboards and wardrobe perimeters where appropriate. Food and cooking items are removed before treatment and returned once the spray is dry. We do not spray food-contact surfaces directly.
Do I need to be home during the treatment?
Most clients prefer to be home for security and access purposes. You do not need to stay in the room during treatment. After the internal treatment is complete you will be asked to vacate treated areas for 1-2 hours while the product dries. For external-only treatments, your presence is not required if access is arranged.
Will the spray kill all types of pests?
Surface spray is highly effective for cockroaches, ants, spiders, and silverfish. It does not treat termites (which require specific termiticide products), bed bugs effectively (which need targeted treatment or heat), or rodents (which need baiting programs). A standard spray treatment covers the most common Brisbane household pest types in a single visit.
