Why Brisbane Has Year-Round Flea Pressure

Why Flea Control Is a Year-Round Problem in Brisbane

Brisbane's subtropical humidity and warm temperatures create year-round flea breeding conditions. Unlike southern cities where cold winters interrupt the flea breeding cycle, Brisbane flea populations remain active in every month of the year. A single missed veterinary flea treatment on a pet can restart an infestation within weeks.

Brisbane Flea Pressure Facts
Cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) is responsible for over 95% of Brisbane residential flea infestations on both cats and dogs. The cat flea thrives in temperatures between 21-32°C and humidity above 50%, conditions that match Brisbane's climate for 10-12 months of the year. A female flea lays 20-50 eggs per day for her entire adult lifespan.

Flea Lifecycle

The Flea Lifecycle: Why Treatment Must Cover All Four Stages

Only 5% of a flea infestation is adult fleas. The other 95% are eggs, larvae, and pupae in carpets, rugs, and furniture. A treatment that only kills adult fleas leaves the breeding population untouched. This is why IGR is essential alongside adulticide spray.

Stage 1
Egg
50% of population

Laid on the pet, eggs fall off into carpets and furniture. Hatch in 2-12 days. Not attached to the pet. Killing adult fleas on the pet does not eliminate eggs already in the environment.

Stage 2
Larva
35% of population

Larvae avoid light and burrow into carpet fibres, feeding on flea faeces and organic matter. Three larval moults over 5-18 days. Larvae are killed by IGR. Difficult to kill with adulticide spray alone.

Stage 3
Pupa
10% of population

The cocoon stage. Pupae are immune to all insecticides including IGR. They remain dormant for days to months until triggered by vibration, warmth, and CO2. They then hatch directly into adult fleas. This is why flea activity continues for 2-4 weeks after treatment.

Stage 4
Adult
5% of population

The visible biting stage. Adults jump onto a host and begin feeding within seconds. A female begins laying eggs within 24-48 hours of her first blood meal. Adult fleas are killed by adulticide spray and by IGR-treated surfaces they contact after hatching from pupae.

Signs of Flea Infestation

Signs of a Flea Infestation in Your Brisbane Home

Many Brisbane households only notice fleas once they or their pets are being bitten. By this point the infestation is established. Earlier signs can identify a problem before it reaches this stage.

Pet scratching excessively

Persistent scratching, biting at the base of the tail, and head shaking in cats and dogs is a reliable early indicator. Flea allergy dermatitis in sensitive pets can cause significant skin reactions from even a small number of fleas.

Flea dirt in pet fur

Small dark specks in the pet's fur, particularly at the base of the tail and around the neck. Flea dirt is flea faeces composed of digested blood. Place specks on a damp white tissue: if they dissolve red-brown, it is flea dirt.

Bites on humans at ankle level

Flea bites on humans typically appear in clusters around the ankles and lower legs. Small red raised bites with a red halo and intense itch. In severe infestations, bites can appear on upper body areas.

Visible fleas on carpets or furniture

Adult fleas are 1-3mm, dark brown, and jump. Moving across carpet in an infested room may produce visible jumping movement. Wearing white socks in an infested area and examining them after walking across carpet confirms adult flea presence.

Fleas in a vacated property

Properties where pets lived become a reliable indicator after the household vacates. Without a host, dormant flea pupae begin hatching in large numbers as they detect vibration. Empty properties can appear flea-free until occupants enter and trigger a mass hatch.

Cat flea activity without cats

Dogs are commonly infested with cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) despite the name. Any dog with outdoor access in Brisbane is a flea host. Wildlife including possums and bandicoots can also carry cat fleas into subfloor spaces and roof voids.

Treatment Process

Flea Treatment Process

Effective flea treatment covers internal carpets and surfaces, external yard areas, and coordinates with pet flea treatment on the same day. Any one of these missing reduces the effectiveness of the overall program.

Stage 1

Inspection

Confirm infestation, identify primary activity areas, assess pet resting locations, check yard. Confirm end-of-lease certificate requirements where applicable.

Stage 2

Internal IGR + Adulticide

IGR (pyriproxyfen or methoprene) applied to all carpets, rugs, floor surfaces, and furniture. Adulticide spray applied to skirting boards, under furniture, and pet resting areas. All rooms treated including bedrooms.

Stage 3

External Yard Treatment

Residual spray applied to garden areas, lawn, and under decking where pets rest and play. Sand and soil-based yard areas receive targeted treatment as these harbour flea larvae. Treatment covers the full yard perimeter.

Stage 4

Report & Certificate

Written service report issued with treatment details, products used, and re-entry time. End-of-lease completion certificate issued where required. 90-day warranty applies from the date of treatment.

Preparation Checklist

What You Need to Do Before Flea Treatment

Preparation significantly affects treatment effectiveness. Vacuuming before treatment stimulates pupae to hatch, exposing them to the treatment. Not vacuuming for 14 days after treatment allows the IGR residual to remain active in carpets.

Vacuum all carpets and rugs the morning of treatment. This stimulates pupae to hatch before the spray is applied. Empty the vacuum canister into a sealed bag and dispose of it immediately.
Wash all pet bedding on a hot cycle on the day of treatment. Pet bedding contains high concentrations of flea eggs, larvae, and flea dirt. Replace with clean bedding after treatment.
Treat your pet with veterinary flea product on the same day as the property treatment. This is not optional. A re-infested untreated pet re-introduces fleas within days of the property treatment.
Remove or cover fish tanks and turn off air pumps. Pyrethroid sprays are toxic to fish at very low concentrations. Bird cages should also be removed or covered during treatment.
Vacate all occupants including pets before the technician arrives. All occupants must remain out for 2-3 hours after treatment until surfaces are dry.
Do not vacuum for 14 days after treatment. The IGR spray on carpets continues working as new adult fleas from hatching pupae contact the treated surface. Early vacuuming removes the residual before it finishes working.
End-of-Lease Flea Treatment

End-of-Lease Flea Treatment Brisbane

End-of-lease flea treatment is required under most Queensland residential lease agreements where pets were kept on the property. This applies regardless of whether a visible flea infestation is present at the time of vacating. See our end of lease pest control page for full details.

FAQ

Flea Control FAQ

How long does flea treatment take to work?
Adult fleas are killed on contact with the adulticide spray, typically within hours. You may see some flea activity for 2-4 weeks after treatment as flea pupae (which are immune to all sprays) hatch and contact the treated surface. This is normal and does not mean the treatment has failed. Do not vacuum for 14 days to allow the IGR residual to remain active in carpets.
How much does flea treatment cost in Brisbane?
Standard flea treatment for a unit costs from $220, and for a 3-4 bedroom house from $280, including internal IGR spray, yard treatment, and 90-day warranty. End-of-lease flea treatment with a completion certificate starts from $220.
Do pets need to leave during flea treatment?
Yes. All occupants including pets must leave the property during treatment and for 2-3 hours after until surfaces are dry. Pets must also be treated with a veterinary flea product on the same day. An untreated pet re-introduces fleas from the outdoor environment within days of the property treatment, regardless of how well the property treatment worked.
What preparation is needed before flea treatment?
Vacuum all carpets the morning of treatment and dispose of the bag or canister contents immediately. Wash all pet bedding on a hot cycle. Treat your pet with veterinary flea product on the same day. Remove or cover fish tanks and turn off air pumps. Vacate all occupants including pets before the technician arrives. Do not vacuum for 14 days after treatment.
Is flea treatment required at end of lease if I had pets?
Yes. Most Queensland residential leases require professional flea treatment with a completion certificate when pets were kept, regardless of whether a visible infestation is present. Flea eggs and pupae can persist in carpets for months without visible adult fleas. Most property managers require a dated completion certificate from a licensed pest management technician.
Do I need to treat my pet as well as the house?
Yes, without exception. Treating the property without treating the pet leaves the primary flea host untreated. The pet will be re-infested by outdoor fleas immediately and will re-introduce fleas to the treated property within days. Treat all pets with a veterinary-recommended product on the same day as the professional property treatment.
Why do I still see fleas after treatment?
Flea pupae are immune to all insecticides. They hatch in response to vibration, warmth, and CO2 and can remain dormant for weeks. When they hatch after treatment, they contact the IGR-treated surface and cannot develop or reproduce. You may see flea activity for 2-4 weeks post-treatment as the pupal population hatches and contacts the treated environment. This is normal. If activity continues beyond 6 weeks, call 0406 178 471 as the 90-day warranty applies.
Does flea treatment include the yard?
Yes. External yard treatment is included in our standard flea treatment pricing. The yard is treated with residual spray, particularly in areas where pets rest and play. Without yard treatment, pets are continuously re-infested outdoors and carry fleas back inside the treated property.
What is an IGR and why is it needed?
IGR (Insect Growth Regulator) prevents flea eggs and larvae from developing into biting adult fleas. Products like pyriproxyfen and methoprene disrupt the flea's development hormones. Without IGR, an adulticide spray kills adult fleas but leaves eggs and larvae to develop within weeks, restarting the infestation cycle. IGR applied to carpets remains active for weeks and addresses the 95% of the flea population that is not in the adult stage at the time of treatment.
What if fleas keep coming back after treatment?
Recurring infestations after treatment are almost always caused by: untreated pets continuously re-introducing fleas from outdoors, the yard was not treated and outdoor populations persist, or there is a wildlife host (possum, bandicoot) in the subfloor or roof void contributing fleas. Our 90-day warranty covers re-treatment if activity returns within 90 days of treatment.
