Mice Control Brisbane
House mice squeeze through gaps as small as 6mm and breed rapidly inside walls, under cabinetry, and in roof insulation. Bait stations plus entry-point exclusion is the only approach that eliminates the current population and prevents re-entry. From $180. 14-day follow-up included.
Mouse Species Found in Brisbane Properties
Two mouse species are treated in Brisbane. The house mouse is by far the more common. The house mouse has been living alongside humans for thousands of years and is specifically adapted to indoor environments.
The species responsible for virtually all indoor mouse infestations in Brisbane. Very small (3-10g), grey-brown with a slightly lighter underside, pointed snout, large ears relative to body size, and a tail roughly equal to body length. Droppings are 3-6mm rod-shaped, often found in concentrated lines along run paths. Breeds rapidly: 5-10 litters per year, 5-8 pups per litter. A single pair can produce 50+ offspring in a year under ideal indoor conditions.
Responsible for nearly all Brisbane indoor infestationsOccasional indoor visitors from adjacent bushland or green space. Slightly larger than house mice with a bicoloured tail (darker above, lighter below). Native species that typically do not establish breeding populations indoors in the way house mice do. More commonly encountered in Brisbane properties near Toohey Forest, Mt Coot-tha, and suburban creek reserves. Treatment is the same as for house mice.
Occasional visitor. Rarely establishes indoors.Where House Mice Live in Brisbane Homes
House mice establish their nest within 5-7 metres of their food source and stay close to it. They are not territorial explorers. If you are seeing mice in the kitchen, the nest is inside the kitchen cabinetry, behind the dishwasher, or inside the wall directly behind it.
Inside kitchen cabinetry
Behind kickboards, inside base unit voids, and in the spaces between cabinetry sections. Warm, dark, and directly next to food sources.
Behind and under appliances
Inside fridge motor housing, behind the dishwasher, inside the rangehood, and behind the washing machine. Motor heat provides warmth year-round.
Inside wall cavities
Moving through wall cavities between rooms, particularly around pipe penetrations where gaps allow entry from outside into the internal wall framework.
Roof insulation
Mice also nest in ceiling insulation batts, particularly when the roof void offers access from outside via eave gaps. Less common than roof rats but present in Brisbane homes with insulation.
Pantry and food storage
Inside pantry shelving, behind stored food, and in gaps between stored containers. A frequently accessed pantry with food gaps is both a food source and a nesting site.
Under bathroom vanity
Inside vanity base units, particularly around the pipe penetrations through the floor where gaps allow wall void access. Mice follow plumbing pipe runs between rooms.
Signs of Mice in Brisbane Homes
Droppings are almost always the first sign. Mouse droppings are distinctly smaller than rat droppings and easy to distinguish once you know what to look for.
Droppings (3-6mm)
Rod-shaped, dark, and very small. Found in lines along run paths under cabinetry, in drawer joints, inside pantry shelves, and behind appliances. Fresh droppings are moist. Older droppings are dry and crumble.
Gnaw marks on food packaging
Mice gnaw through cardboard, plastic, and foil packaging to access food. Gnaw marks in pantry items, particularly at the corner of boxes and bags, confirm active mouse presence.
Gnaw marks on electrical cable
Mouse gnawing on electrical cable insulation is a serious fire risk. Most commonly found behind appliances and in wall cavities. Cable damage is urgent and warrants same-day treatment.
Musty urine smell
A persistent musty ammonia smell from under cabinetry, inside cupboards, or from wall cavities. Detectable in established infestations and concentrated near the nest site.
Nesting material
Shredded paper, fabric, insulation material, and food scraps gathered in a nest site. Common nest locations are inside the space under the kickboard, behind the dishwasher, and inside roof insulation.
Sounds at night
Light scratching, gnawing, and scurrying sounds from under cabinetry and inside walls at night. Mouse sounds are lighter and faster than rat sounds. Heard more clearly when the house is quiet after midnight.
Health Risks from Brisbane House Mice
Mice in the kitchen are a food safety issue as well as a hygiene concern. The health risks are significant and are the reason local councils and food authorities treat mouse infestations in commercial premises as a serious compliance failure.
Salmonella and Leptospirosis
Mouse droppings and urine on food preparation surfaces and in stored food directly transmit Salmonella. Leptospirosis is transmitted through mouse urine in water sources and contaminated surfaces.
Allergens and asthma
Mouse droppings, urine, and shed hair are significant allergen sources. In households with ongoing mouse activity, airborne mouse allergens are a known asthma trigger, particularly in children.
Hantavirus
Contracted by inhaling dust from dried mouse droppings and urine, particularly during cleaning or property renovation. Rare in Australia but the risk increases with large infestations in enclosed spaces.
Electrical fire risk
Mouse gnawing on electrical cable insulation is the most serious structural risk. Bare cable from gnawing can arc and start fires inside wall cavities. Brisbane has documented house fires attributable to rodent electrical cable damage.
Mouse Treatment Process
Mouse treatment requires getting stations into the spaces mice actually use. A station on the kitchen bench is useless. Stations need to be inside the kickboard void, under the dishwasher, and along the wall run the mice are travelling.
Inspection and run identification
Droppings, gnaw marks, and grease marks along skirting boards and behind appliances mapped. Nest site location confirmed. Primary and secondary run paths identified to determine optimal station placement.
Bait stations and snap traps
Small tamper-resistant bait stations placed inside kickboard voids, under appliances, and in wall cavities along confirmed run paths. Snap traps placed at nest site entrances where immediate knockdown is needed. Stations every 2-3 metres along active runs.
14-Day follow-up
Return visit at 14 days. Bait take assessed and bait replaced where consumed. Snap traps checked. Any remaining juvenile mice from the nest that were too small to access stations at the first visit are addressed. Entry point exclusion completed at this visit.
Exclusion
Entry gaps 6mm and larger sealed with steel wool combined with silicone or expanding foam. Door sweeps recommended for doors with gaps at the base. Weep hole mesh covers recommended. Report with all identified entry points issued to the client.
Mouse Entry Point Exclusion
A 6mm gap is all a house mouse needs to enter. Sealing entry points after treatment is what prevents reinfestation. Bait treatment without exclusion produces a temporary result: new mice from the surrounding environment enter via the same gaps within weeks of the original population being eliminated.
Under doors (door sweeps)
A gap of 6mm under an external door is a primary mouse entry point. Door sweeps installed at the base of external doors, particularly kitchen doors opening to the garage or garden, are the most effective single exclusion measure for Brisbane units and houses.
Around pipe penetrations (steel wool + sealant)
Gaps around kitchen and bathroom pipe penetrations through walls and floors. Steel wool packed into the gap and sealed with silicone is the standard material. Mice cannot chew through steel wool. Foam alone is ineffective as mice chew through it.
Weep holes (mesh covers)
Standard brick weep holes are 75mm wide, large enough for mice to enter. Mesh weep hole covers allow ventilation while preventing mouse entry. Available from hardware stores and included in our exclusion report recommendations.
Gaps in skirting boards and kickboards
Gaps where skirting boards meet the floor, and where kickboards meet the floor under cabinetry, are internal transit routes rather than entry points. Sealing these reduces mouse movement between rooms but does not prevent entry from outside.
