Types of Pests in Brisbane: Identification Guide

Updated May 2026 11 min read Response Pest Control

Quick ID guide: 6 legs = insect (cockroaches, ants, beetles, flies, fleas). 8 legs = arachnid (spiders, mites, ticks). No legs + body segments = silverfish, millipede, or earwig. Wings + yellow/black = wasp or bee. Small mammal + night noise = rodent. Hollow timber + mud tubes = termites.

Correct pest identification is the prerequisite for correct treatment. The most common treatment failures in DIY pest control happen because the wrong product is applied to the wrong species. This guide covers Brisbane's 20 most commonly encountered pest species with the visual identification markers, evidence types, and immediate action guidance for each.

Quick Visual ID by Body Type

🦟
6 legs
Cockroaches, ants, beetles, fleas, silverfish, flies, mosquitoes, wasps
🕷️
8 legs
Spiders, mites, ticks, scorpions. Not insects: different treatment required
🐀
Fur + 4 legs
Rats, mice, possums. Vertebrate pests: different management approach
🐛
Many legs

🪲
Hard wing covers
Beetles: stored product pests (weevils, flour beetles) or wood borers

Roof void dust treatment lasts 12+ months. Reduce moisture and cardboard storage.

Flying Ants vs Termite Swarmers: The Key Distinction

Flying ants vs termite alates: quick identification
Look at the waist:
Narrow pinched waist = ant. Check antennae: elbowed = ant confirmed.
No waist (uniform body width) = likely termite swarmer.
Look at the wings:
Unequal wing sizes (front wings larger) = ant
Equal wing sizes, wings very long relative to body = termite swarmer
Look at the antennae:
Elbowed/bent antennae = ant
Straight/bead-like antennae = termite swarmer
If termite swarmers are found inside the building in large numbers, this strongly indicates an active colony in or near the structure. Call a licensed operator within 24 hours. Do not sweep them up and ignore.

Wasps

🐝
Paper wasp Polistes spp.
DIY small nests only
Size20-25mm, narrow waist, orange-brown and yellow
NestOpen hexagonal comb under eaves and in pergolas
Colony20-100 individuals at peak
SeasonFounding nests Aug-Sept; peak Dec-Apr
Small nests DIY-treatable at dusk. Large nests, cavity nests, or allergy households: call professional. Wasp guide.
European wasp Vespula germanica
Professional only
Size12-17mm, stocky, bright yellow and black
FlightLegs held close to body (paper wasps dangle legs)
NestEnclosed grey papery structure in cavities or underground
RiskMultiple stings, aggressive defence, large colony
Do not approach. Professional dust injection required. Same-day service available. European wasp guide.

Fleas and Bed Bugs

🦟
Cat and dog flea Ctenocephalides felis / canis
Lifecycle treatment needed
Size1-3mm, laterally flattened, brown-black
EvidenceBites on ankles, flea dirt (black specks) in pet bedding
LifecycleEggs and larvae in carpet; adults on pet (5% of population)
BrisbaneYear-round; lifecycle 2-3 weeks in summer
Treat pet and home on same day. IGR spray required for carpet stages. Flea guide.
🛏
Common bed bug Cimex lectularius
Professional treatment required
SizeAdult 4-7mm, flat oval, mahogany-red
EvidenceBites in lines on shoulders and arms, black faecal spotting on mattress seams
LocationMattress seams, bed frame joints, bedhead, skirting boards near bed
IntroductionHotel luggage, second-hand furniture, shared apartments
DIY pyrethroid spray is ineffective due to resistance. Professional heat or 3-visit chemical program required. Bed bug guide.

When to Act vs When to Monitor

Not every pest sighting requires immediate treatment. A single huntsman spider indoors in summer needs no action. A single cockroach in a clean kitchen may be a stray rather than an established population. The evidence that warrants immediate action is repeated sightings in the same location, evidence in multiple rooms, egg capsules or nesting material, or any structural damage (termite hollow timber, rodent gnaw marks on cables).

The pests requiring immediate professional contact regardless of apparent severity: active termite workings anywhere in the building, European wasps near the building, fire ants on the property (call Biosecurity Queensland 13 25 23), and German cockroaches with daytime activity or spread beyond the kitchen. For all other pest types, correct identification followed by the appropriate treatment method is the starting point. All Brisbane pest identification and treatment information is available at the pest guide directory.

Stored Product Pests

Pantry beetles and grain weevils are introduced into Brisbane homes through infested packaging from supermarkets and bulk food stores. They are not introduced through structural gaps or from the garden. The flour beetle (Tribolium confusum, 3mm, red-brown, flat) and grain weevil (Sitophilus granarius, 2-3mm, distinctive snout) infest dry goods including flour, cereals, rice, dried fruit, and pet food. Infested products need to be discarded, pantry shelves cleaned with a vacuum and damp cloth, and all remaining dry goods transferred to sealed hard containers. No chemical treatment is required in most cases; the source is always infested packaging rather than a building infestation.

For repeat pantry beetle issues, inspect incoming grocery deliveries for any signs of packaging damage or insect activity before storing. Commercial food storage uses hermetic sealing and cold treatment to prevent infestation; domestic pantries do not, which is why infested products occasionally reach consumers. Airtight glass or hard plastic containers for all dry goods eliminate the ongoing risk entirely.

Identified a pest but not sure what action to take?

Same-day inspection across Brisbane and Gold Coast. Correct treatment for confirmed species.

Frequently Asked Questions

Termites. They consume internal timber while leaving a thin surface layer intact. Tap with a coin or knuckle; hollow sound in a solid structural timber member warrants immediate professional inspection. Do not break open the surface. Call within 24 hours.
Trail insects on open surfaces are almost always ants. Ants trail in both directions along pheromone paths. Termites do not trail on open surfaces; they move in mud tubes. Identify ant species by size: 2-3mm black = black house ant; 1.5-2mm yellow-brown = coastal brown ant; 6-12mm black = carpenter ant.
Three checks: (1) waist: ant has a narrow pinched waist; termite swarmer has uniform body width; (2) antennae: ant antennae are elbowed; termite antennae are straight; (3) wings: ant front wings are larger than rear; termite wings are equal and very long. Termite swarmers indoors in numbers means call a professional immediately.
Redback: black body, 10mm, red/orange stripe on abdomen, under outdoor furniture and in sheds. Funnel-web: large, black, aggressive upright posture with raised front legs, fangs visible. Do not handle either. Huntsman (large, flat, brown, no web) is harmless. Photograph from a safe distance if unsure.
